Re: Heating pad to re-liquify honey

1 jar? Large pan of hot water out of the tap. Let soak for an hour or two. Invert jar periodically to mix. Replace water if it gets too cool. Supposed to work. I just used the defrost setting on the...
  2. Re: Anybody else have as much trouble joining as I did?

Aha! The overwhelming desire to exercise one's First Amendment rights. Good.
  3. Re: Welch's frozen concentrate grape juice discontinued

I did not know that there were recipes on the web for this. I looked over a few and noted that the recipe I have uses less juice and more sugar than the others. Also does not require tannic acid. I...

Re: Installing Nuc in Horizontal Langstroth

If you haven't seen these plans already, here is a link to a nice and inexpensive swarm trap you can build. They can double as 6 frame nucs when you dont have them hanging in trees....

    Re: Pricing a 5-frame nuc

Talk to your local beekeepers association or post an ad on Craigslist. You should be able to get anywhere from the $180 mentioned earlier to $225 for a proven overwintered nuc. Selling the bees and...

    Re: Drones...

I seem to recall that the temps need to be mid sixties before the queen will go on a mating flight. I do know they prefer the mid day heat as most flights appear to take place between 2 and 4 pm....
  7. Re: Welch's frozen concentrate grape juice discontinued

Update: The brew store does sell the pH strips and the grape juice I mixed up is actually higher than the scale which only reads up to 4.4, I am guessing it is closer to neutral. So, I mixed up 6...

    Amen.
  9. Re: Wick size for tapers and other similar sized candles

Missed that one by a mile, didnt I. Feral cats are OK, I guess. Not big on affection but supposedly good mousers. My sister-in-law feeds 29 in her back yard. Only a few will let her touch them.
  10. Re: Wick size for tapers and other similar sized candles

It is nice when the girls come out to keep you company. I had several buzzing around my head yesterday while out on the back deck. They were not being aggressive at all, just curious.

Re: Installing Nuc in Horizontal Langstroth

Stability is the main reason for using any support. The bees will draw straight comb without any skewers or wires provided the hive is level and there is a flat surface next to the comb (like another...

    Re: Research Project

Rangerlee, this project sounds like a reasonable endeavor. Bee nutrition is an area that needs much better understanding. I am happy to provide my support.

    Poll: Re: Engineering Project

Mbear, I suspect this motorized hand truck could be modified to be a rather efficient hive transport. I have used it for its intended purpose and it works very well.

Re: Installing Nuc in Horizontal Langstroth

Dowel rod does work. It is a lot more expensive than the bamboo skewers. One or two hives, cost is not an issue. 400+ frames and the costs can start to add up. I currently have about 900 frames in...
  15. Re: Adding empty supers on a first year colony?

Hmm, add two supers, no QE, and do you want more hives? Sounds the girls are ready to be split.

Re: Installing Nuc in Horizontal Langstroth

I love show and tell. Here is a picture of a ready to use frame strung with the fishing line and a pboto of a partially drawn frame. I would like to use bamboo skewers horizontally in my lang frames,...

    Re: 2019 Winter solstice

I also open feed Ultrabee powder. When the bees are hitting it hard below 50, I figure it is time to put the patties inside the hives. Similar to the idea posited in the water droplets thread, if...
  18. Wick size for tapers and other similar sized candles

Hi all. A question was posed to me about appropriate wick sizes for tapers and votives. I have been using 2/0 square braid cotton wick for my candles, but want to hear what others are using, and if...
  19. Re: Adding empty supers on a first year colony?

If the nectar flow is truly imminent, I would rotate the upper box to the bottom and add the undrawn super. I imagine the current lower box is mostly empty and this will give the queen space to move...

    Re: 2019 Winter solstice

I make them because I am cheap. I have purchased the Ultrabee pre-made patties before, but they can be pricey compared to just mixing them up yourself. Since I am using Ultrabee powder, I think...

Re: Installing Nuc in Horizontal Langstroth

Hi there ironclad. I switched from wax foundation to foundationless last year and am having pretty good success. Like Squarepeg suggested, your initial setup should be HEBBBEH-follower board. Be...

    Re: 2019 Winter solstice

Here in Richmond it has warmed back up yet again. Only had about four nights in the low twenties. Rain today so I am making more pollen patties. There are as many recipes out there as there are beeks...
  23. Re: Filtering / Cleaning dull coloured beeswax

This is where a solar wax melter should help, at least I hope so for my own benefit. Coffee filter should work as long as the wax is kept hot for a prolonged period of time. Maybe even an oven with a...

    Re: Used equipment

Oh yeah. Cleaning frames is dirty work. Wax and propolis gets everywhere and in the end, you may not have anything worth keeping. New frames are under $1 from ML in boxes of 100 (unassembled). I...
