    Re: queen less hive swarm????

This week I split a hive that had two capped queen cells. A few days later one of the splits swarmed. Wonder if the second half will swarm. It is packed with bees.

    Re: Smoker Fuel

    This works.

I have found that putting the smoker on it's side or even tilted slightly down works better than having it upright. Light some newspaper and slowly squeeze the bellows to keep it lit....

    Re: Summer Inspections

Treatment free is tricky. I tried it and had bad results, ended up treating but way too late and the bees died anyway. A lot also depends on the type of bee. Some hives are very susceptible to mites...

Re: Laying Worker(s) and Queen Cells

Hmm. Seeing the same thing, in an overwintered nuc where I have not seen a queen since last fall. Two capped queen cells and one open, occupied.

I gave it a frame of brood of all ages on 4/28, so...
  5. Re: What race of queen is this? What does an Afracanized queen look like?

That looks exactly like my queens, but they are quite calm and overwinter well in Illinois, so not a lot if any African.

My opinion is African genes only matter if the bees get mean, or they...
  6. Re: German Black bees in the Southeastern US actually Apis mellifera iberiensis?

After all the crossbreeding of many different strains of bees imported into the US, only genome typing can tell the ancestry of a bee.

The way gene crossing works, after a few generations a...

    Re: Is this a SHB?

Looks like it. Hate those buggers. Last year had a bunch, none yet this year. Several times I actually pulled all the frames, killed all the beetles and put the frames in a new hive box. It seemed to...

    Welcome Nicole! Dive right in.

You may get some grumpy old folks complaining about the flow hive on here. Ask them to be nice! Lots of different kinds of equipment in use by different members...

Re: When do I start "doing stuff"?

I am 4 years in and just getting a handle on things. I was very slow to treat mites and it bit hard. Even if you plan to go Au-natural and not treat in the future, my plain advice is to treat the...

Re: You don't know til you look

    A good problem to have.

Sounds like a swarm coming. Move that box outside, or leave it there with the shop door open. Once the swarm is inside move it somewhere.

Re: You don't know til you look

Went back in that hive and sliced off a whole strip of drone comb, from the bottom of a medium frame I put in a deep for that purpose. Not one mite found, so happy about that. There are two of those...

Re: You don't know til you look

I am in suburbia, so keeping a few bait hives just seems like a good thing to do to keep my neighbors from being pestered by swarms. So far I have had two, caught both. Also one attempted swarm...

Cool. Happy days. The mice, spiders and wasps have prepped the wood.

And yet, here you are. Sometimes no action is the right action.

My theory is that everyone is crazy in at least one way or another. What matters is does the crazy work out or not. The human...

Re: Hive swarmed what to do with super

Leave it alone is my feeling. You might have a queen cell in that medium. Have you checked?

Re: You don't know til you look

    Saved by the cross, again.

That crab apple is a volunteer, from seeds from our backyard apple. Occasionally a volunteer will have good apples, so my plan was to leave it until it made apples and...

Re: Please Post your Swarm Dates?

Today, 5/27/2020, from a nuc in my back yard. This was a split I made just 2 days ago. Landed in a small tree just in front of the hive and I clipped the branch and boxed it. Took two tries as most...

Re: You don't know til you look

So apparently all it required was a little self-pity and whining. Back yard bees swarmed just now, pics to follow. Surprised that the swarm issued from the nuc I split just two days ago! Is there a...

Re: You don't know til you look

I keep reading about swarms all around me, most recently, posted here on Beesource, in Chicago which is directly east of me, and GregV has seen swarms 90 miles NORTH of me. I feel sad and neglected...

Sticky: Re: bone head split so far, somebody save the day.

Sounds like me. I rarely have things planned in advance. Right now I am considering more splits but am getting low on frames. Most of my frames always seem to be out in swarm traps. After a few times...

Sticky: Re: GregV's Alternative way to keep (have?) bees.

No scouts here either, since I split my bigger colony a few days ago. No scouts from outside my hives either, which seems a bit odd. Still, it is early. I do know one local no longer has bees, sold...

Re: Flow in Northern Illinois, Chicago suburbs

Lots of stuff blooming right now. Raspberries, wild cherry. We can get a dearth in July if it is hot and dry, but prior to July it is all on. Usually good flows in Fall too.

    The key is weather...

Re: Is my situation right for beekeeping?

Yes to bees next to the house, back door. I have two nucs 5 and 8 feet from my back door, right on the patio. I sit there and drink tea a few feet from the entrances, never stung there.
