    Re: Uncapping methods

I've tried hot knife, sharp knife, uncapping fork and now am using heat gun. Heat gun is by far the easiest but you don't get much wax. Still not only is there less mess but there is less overall...

Re: Fall flow in piedmont area NC

I typically see a modest Goldenrod flow in mid to late August for a few weeks but it's not enough to harvest honey from. I let the bees keep it and reduce feeding accordingly.

    Moving queen cells early

Have you had any success with moving grafted queen cells to mating nucs on day 8 (with day 1 being graft date)? This may be my only option. Thanks.

Re: Two overwintered hives won't get going

Sometimes queens aren't as good as you thought that they were. (I just requeened 2 overwintered nucs.) Mites must always be in your decision making algorhythm. Sometimes adding a frame of capped...

    Re: Sweet Mountain Honey

I purchased 3 packages from them last year or the year before and all three did well, delivered on time as promised etc.
  7. Re: When to stop feeding a new package of bees?

I would stop feeding them if you have nectar available/coming in particularly if you installed the package on drawn comb. They will fill everything up with nectar and the queen will have no place to...

    Re: To Early For Syrup?

My hives are bringing in nectar (and pollen) so I'm not feeding. I have split early as we have had an "early spring." One hive which I have split from twice already, I fed this weekend. Do you have...

    Re: weak hive

Well, you need to get into the hive to figure things out. But two additional things to consider would be to reduce the weak hive down to a nuc and adding a frame of capped brood from another hive....

Re: Opinions on what to do with very weak hive

I would also add a frame of mixed brood (mostly capped) to weak hive IF you have it to spare. Not combine. See what happens. That's the fun part.

    Re: 3 Frame Nuc?

Maybe. Depends on how strong your queen is, how good an emergency queen you make, your flow etc.. You risk weakening your original hive (which is little more than a nuc at this point). Why not focus...

    Re: Fruit Tree Treatment

I have a small orchard, 20 apple trees; and tried to avoid spraying insecticides for 2 years. Ultimately I had to use Bonide and Neem oil. I spray at night, when no flowers are on trees-- just common...

    Re: Smoker

I have and use both Dadant and Mann Lake. Though this thread is heavily pro Dadant both work very well. Some small pros and cons each way. I like wooden bellows and agree with getting finger guard....
  17. Re: Help! hundreds dead bees after flurry of activity Jan 31 2016 Long Island NY

Probably just bees from your hive reorienting and taking out dead bees from your hive first chance they got.

Robbing is possible especially this time of year with warm breaks, but unlikely unless...
  18. Re: Who puts swarm traps in or near their apiary in case thier own hives swarm?

If you have bees, they will swarm. Impossible to (completely) prevent, like trying to stop teenagers from dating.

Pay attention to your property. If you notice a swarm on a particular tree, limb...

  20. Re: Earliest Mature Drones in Piedmont of North Carolina

I would agree w mid March. Some I know split as early as Valentines day. I keep Russians, Italians, and combinations thereof. Haven't noted drone timing differences.
  21. Re: I want to attempt to attract/catch a swarm....

In addition excellent advice given, if you know of a tree where someone has ever seen a swarm to have gone, use that tree. Bees will often choose the same tree to swarm to.
  22. Re: Best way to store drawn frames until spring?

I freeze my frames for a few days and then place as many that can fit into trash bag and seal it tight. I can fit an entire medium w frames in one kitchen trash bag then seal the ends and stack them....
  23. Poll: Re: Do you wear a respirator when vaporizing oxalic acid?

I have used an N95 mask but not consistently. I hold my breath, know the wind direction, and stand away. Outdoors, with such discretion, the risk is honestly minimal. However if I had pulmonary...

Re: 2nd year, buy packages or Nuc's

    Why not "split" the difference?

Make splits from 2 hives (assuming you overwinter well) and pick up 2 nucs? If nothing else, for the experience. That would get you close to your goal and you...
