Re: Set It and Forget It?

Bit harsh I think. You do not judge a hive as too hot upon one check. Reminds me of the old "Bond " debates.
Time will tell if your read is correct.

Re: Set It and Forget It?

"Much less call them a fool for trying something out of the box."

Must have missed "fool" the part. Some very negative views of the plan, some very dim views of the beekeeping style, that is a far...

I will accept your experience in Spring Hill Florida. Congratulations.

Will you accept the advice given is for NY?

Re: 2 frame mini nuc split

They do better than I ever thought they would in close to the mann lake size. Capable of average at least. Have not done enough to rate queens as a rule.

    Re: Holy Laying Worker, Batman!!

    Worth a short shot.

Photos are only like looking at an elephant through a straw. View leaves out more than it shows.

There is no attack. He or she asked for feedback.
Man or Woman enough to ask and accept the the advice. Does not mean they have to take it. Asking means there was some basic question in their mind...

Re: 2 frame mini nuc split

A manged hive on poor ground does better than an unmanaged hive on good ground is my sad experience.

As a hobby it is more enjoyable as well.

Re: Set It and Forget It?

" I was thinking a single deep with a QE, then deep super and med super above that. "

I'm thinking they will get slimed to death before anything else gets them.

Anybody want to start a pool?

It may work, but 5 frames is too big an investment?

    Re: Ok need some insight

I could get away with a patty, I think most FL posters would say small hive beetles would invade yours. Small amount might be ok.

I would feed until there is a solid amount of stores or until...

    Re: Holy Laying Worker, Batman!!

Dates help. These splits with open/closed swarm cells or brood? Not convinced one way or the other on young queen or LW. On the edge of both timelines. Does she have any open comb to lay of is she...

    Re: Holy Laying Worker, Batman!!

I split my three hives about 5 weeks ago.
about 2 weeks into the split and found 5+ queen cells in each split hive.

That is a lot of "abouts".

Those eggs are nailed to the bottom and nectar...

    Re: Ok need some insight

You need young bees to draw comb.
You will not get brood without adequate stores.
You say your bees are light on stores.
Feed them until you have open and some capped stores.
    Then place an...

    Re: Ok need some insight

Carniolan/Italian cross can be rather a mutt. One may act one way and her sister another.

If they are bring in stores and not brooding I would worry about quiet robbing. No fighting just looting....

Sticky: Re: Rearing queens for a small operation

    Depends on your goals.
Want to reuse the starter? then move has a strong pull.
Want to keep your hives natural or not tie up your starter bees. Put over excluder.

Sticky: Re: Rearing queens for a small operation

They are not capped for 16 days. They are capped at 16 days in the timeline, a timeline that starts at egg laying.

Confusing when looking at it from a split timeline, which is already beginning...

    Re: Bee math help

I would not worry about putting another nuc on top. Would not go poking around inside.

  23. Re: Placement of cells into queenless colonies

If it is warm enough, I do not think there would be any difference. I think it is warm enough now.

Requeening with a queen cell in the top is a pretty common commercial procedure from my reading.

    Re: Laying worker question

Between moving a full hive and 5 small nucs I would move the nucs and leave them there if I could find a spot. Less likely to face a rob out when the flow stops.
