  1. Re: Still have lots of drone brood so today I grafted.

I don't have a foam mini, but I do have a short three frame nuc box. It can't be too costly.
  2. Re: Still have lots of drone brood so today I grafted.

Okay, now you guys got me in the mood to try a late split to see if I can get a couple of new queens mated.. :pinch:

    Re: Hornet Nest

A turkey choke, I'm presuming that it's a tight (small) pattern, so you may have to back up another step or two. ;) It might be good to take a piece of paper and check the pattern size at a known...

    Re: Hornet Nest

Yes sir, JW, it works great if you can match that 870's pattern to the nest size..........but be careful of what's beyond.

    Re: Hornet Nest

At 5 or 6 yds. number 8 shot will completely remove ALL inhabitants AND the nest (6" or less) from a tree.....COMPLETELY. Number 9 shot might work better for larger nests in the 7-8" size maybe...

    Re: Wax Melter plexiglass thickness

I use a piece of 3/16" for mine. I think the 1/2" will work as long as it's clear. All I can say is try it.

    Re: Hornet Nest

I use gasoline or automotive solvent in a pump-up sprayer....it's pretty much an instant kill.

I have used the shotgun method very successfully for nests smaller than 6" or so.....in trees only.

Never tried this, but it's what a google look found......
  9. Re: Bear fence question - Can I use the same ground for multiple fences?

Frank, I think I might have a couple of chargers around here in the shed. This winter, when I have nothing to do, I may have to hook them up and test this out with the help of a volt/amp meter to...
  10. Re: Bear fence question - Can I use the same ground for multiple fences?

I'm not an electrician or anyone who knows for sure, but I do have some practical knowledge and common sense (not to say the others answers lack either of those). I do have some experience with...
  11. Re: Bear fence question - Can I use the same ground for multiple fences?

I don't know why not use the same ground.....all the different circuits in breaker box go to the same ground.

    Re: Capturing Wild Bees Question

b1rd, after I re read my post, I thought I sounded critical. I didn't mean to, but that's what it sounded like.

Your free to start keeping bees any way you see fit, and, by the way, it sounds...

    Re: Capturing Wild Bees Question

^^^That's like starting with a package of bees, but it's too late for this season....at least it is here.

I think it would be a good idea to have & keep a hive of bees and see what they need...
  14. Re: Arbor Day Tree Survey = how much free bee food??

We've gotten free trees from the Arbor Day Foundation occasionally......they are very small (usually around 12" tall), but will grow if planted & taken care of. I think my wife usually makes a small...

    Re: Oxylic acid schedule

My OAV treatment is every fifth day for a series of 5 treatments.....evening is fine. Tuesday will be my second round.
  16. Re: OA vaporization is probably safe with honey supers - here's my calculations

I agree with Mike's statement above, but then we all live with warnings of all kinds, everyday. Whether they are printed on a product label or in a medical journal, warnings are out there. Too much...
  17. Re: OA vaporization is probably safe with honey supers - here's my calculations

Frank, I can understand your concern with taste or smell in honey from OA. But if we are after such subtle changes in taste, what about the possible changes brought on by, perhaps, the bees walking...
  18. Re: OA vaporization is probably safe with honey supers - here's my calculations

....and I doubt that you will ever sit down and consume a pound of honey at one meal. That stack of pancakes might soak up 3-4 ounces at best. Thanks for crunching the numbers, username00101....
  19. Re: How long to confine bees after local spraying

I agree with the above post, but the insecticide used could make a difference also. I've been out of the loop of spraying soybeans for more than 5 years, so I don't know what they use in today's...
  20. Re: Florida beekeeper claims someone poisoned, killed nearly 7 million of his honeybe

If it is sprayed directly on them, it may have that effect, I don't know. But I doubt bees go looking for RU'd plants to forage on since the plant is dying already.

RU is probably one of the...
  21. Re: Florida beekeeper claims someone poisoned, killed nearly 7 million of his honeybe

Mark Davis' credibility took a major hit when he said, "Round-Up is the worst thing anyone can use."

Round-Up does NOT kill bees, it may deprive bees of some forage plants at times, but it's NOT...

Re: Wifes First Time in a Bee Hive

Nice video, and my only suggestion would be to stay away from black or dark colored clothing while inspecting hives. Some bees seem to be aggressive toward dark colors.

    Re: Greetings from Suriname!

Sting-less bees sound interesting, and horizontal comb will be different. I'm not sure what you mean by individual 'pots' for storing honey. Maybe some pictures might enlighten us as to different...

    Re: Greetings from Suriname!

I had to google where that was....... You're not far from the equator, so I imagine that bee keeping will be a year-round effort for you. Good luck, and welcome to BeeSource.

    Re: Is this unusual?

Welp, I checked into the suspect hive today and looked around. Looked for a queen, but no joy, but then I'm a poor queen finder. Found 5 empty queen cells that appeared to have hatched. With my...
