  1. Re: Electric fence charger - how do I charge my battery, and how long will it last?

David, You must make some amazing pimiento cheese sandwiches
  2. Re: Oav for nucs made up with queen cells

I have even done OAV on Nucs with virgins (when they rejected my Qcell and raised their own) with no apparent harm. They mated fine and the nucs made it through the next winter.

Re: OA VAP 110.04 Oxalic Acid Vaporizer

Oh come on five minutes of my handheld video would make any head spin. My bottom boards stick out several inches so I set the unit on that and slide the tube in the entrance reducer as far as...

Re: OA VAP 110.04 Oxalic Acid Vaporizer

    Joerg,
I am falling in love with your vaporizer! As its cold up your way and you can't do a video treating live bees I thought I should give it a try. So here is 15 hives in 14 minutes including...

    Re: Nursery cage

Ruth,. I'm trying to understand that frame contraption. It looks to me if you take the cover off all 35 to 40 Queens are free to run at once. Is there a way to contain individuals? years ago when I...
  6. Re: Splitting the hive up completely into new nucleus colonies

Last summer I took a simaler plunge. I split 9 hives into 60. Before splitting I fed and built them up to double deeps full of brood. I did it in stages over about a month leaving the established...
  7. Re: Treating a resource hive with Formic Pro

For what it's worth if you wish to try a different treatment I have had no problems using OAV on Nucs with queencells, virgins or freshly mated queens.

Re: OA VAP 110.04 Oxalic Acid Vaporizer

    Thanks Joerg,
Feedback time! I just treated 53 hives in 60 minutes with my new unit from you. Thats about three times as fast as my old two wand system so I am thrilled! I did wrap some flat...

Re: Treated lumber for hive stand

I highly recommend treated wood or for resistant wood like white oak....once the untreated wood starts to rot it's a gamble when it will collapse under a summer hive weight. Would you build your...
  10. Re: Bees bringing in lots of pollen (?); what plant(s) could it be?

I just checked this morning and our witch hazel and pussy willow are blooming as well as red maples out in a feild but not in the forest. Albemarle county, Va
  11. Re: Bees bringing in lots of pollen (?); what plant(s) could it be?

Yes I am rural but I did see my neighbors maple buds popping open and the bees are flying hard on these warm days I saw Bright yellow and a greenish pollen. On saturday and Sunday the bees picked...
  12. Re: Bees bringing in lots of pollen (?); what plant(s) could it be?

I believe maples kicked into gear yesterday outside of Charlottesville VA.....not to far south from you. My dry pollen sub feeder became very unpopular all of a sudden.

Re: OA VAP 110.04 Oxalic Acid Vaporizer

I asked the question regarding insulation and aluminum foil tape was my first though to protect the insulation. Thinking about it more the foil might get beat up as well. I wonder if one could...
  14. Re: Efficient Method of Queen rearing for Splits?

I find it very easy to graft into a packed starter finisher. I typically graft a bar of 17 or so cells every 3-4 days so that the bees always have three bars with one open bar of cells to feed. ...

Re: Searching for Nuc entrance disks

I picked up ten of the cheap stainless steel ones to test and they are ok. Its like someone scaled down a proper sized one for cost without taking into account the size of bees. The thin slot...

Re: Searching for Nuc entrance disks

Yes I agree but with the smaller disks in the photo I posted rarely need hive tool pry to get them to turn but the larger disks almost always do. I prefer to simplify my work if possible.

    Searching for Nuc entrance disks

Years ago I bought a bunch of great entrance disks for my nucs that I like better than any of the ones bee supply catalogs sell. I bought them on Ebay from a Ukrainian company but when they shipped...

    Re: beekeeping within city limits

Yes you have the correct location. Before they changed the code it was illegal in urban areas of the county and the county attorney had issued an order for the beekeeper to move his hives in...

Re: OA VAP 110.04 Oxalic Acid Vaporizer

Thanks for the detailed response JoergK.
Ironically I was in my bees doing the winter treatment with my two wand vaporizers. It took me just over 3 hours to do 60 hives. I currently use Varrox...

Re: OA VAP 110.04 Oxalic Acid Vaporizer

    Joerg,
A few questions as I am in the market for a faster way to treat my bees than the wands I have.
Yours looks nice and stout but I am wondering if the tube is strong enough to not be damaged...

Re: How do I relax w/bees?

Re: Did I kill my Queen? NNOOOOO!

Yes fainting queens happen to me every year and it is so disconcerting. This year for the first time i did have one not recover from the faint...as in I killed her. I know she was not squished and...
  25. Re: Solar Wax Melter - 1 or 2 Panes of Glass and Why?

Oh I also tried foil-faced eps and it melted as well. I just looked it up and it melts at 212degrees. If I recall correctly a sheet roughly 6" by 16" turned I to a little curled up hard plastic...
