  4. Sticky: Re: SW Michigan Horizontal Hives - Sans Treatments

Yup, my swarm boxes are basically small beehives, just narrow and tall. Frames the size of two Langstroth Mediums on turned on end.

I do still need to check the two traps closer to the river, but...

with my Layens hives I built top bars that don't touch (like the ones in this link, but with Layens dimensions: http://horizontalhive.com/how-to-build/deep-frame-do-it-yourself.shtml ) and use a...

6-14 swarm call in Douglas, Michigan. (South of Holland)
Maybe a 3-4 pound swarm hanging on a tree branch off of someone's deck. Easy capture, scooped 'em into a bucket and brought them home.

  14. Re: replacing inner cover with a fabric or plastic

They start arguing amongst themselves and forget you're there. It's genius really. ;)
  15. Re: Free books give away - about horizontal hives.

Another good find Greg! Definitely enjoyed watching it. Thanks for sharing.
  16. Re: replacing inner cover with a fabric or plastic

Adding to what GregV said, another simple reason a cloth cover is nice, you can work part of the hive while leaving the rest covered and undisturbed.
You can peek directly in the center of the box...

    Re: Lazutin Hive

Wow! Those straw/reed/cattail hives are super impressive, especially the fruit-press-like mechanism he has set up to compact the reeds in the frame.
I like it. The inspection video is very helpful...
  19. Sticky: Re: SW Michigan Horizontal Hives - Sans Treatments

    Exactly my plan!
I'm going with thinner top bars (anywhere from 1 1/4 inches to 3/4 inch wide) instead of the inch and a half.
Going to use cover cloths to form the ceiling (actually a lot like...
  20. Sticky: Re: SW Michigan Horizontal Hives - Sans Treatments

Been building my own, so a frame-making weekend sometime sounds like a good idea to me!

So far, my father-in-law and I have been ripping scrap lumber for frames and also for making conversion bars...

    Quick update:
Nucleus/swarm boxes are just about ready for paint now.
