Re: I need to move my hives. When is best?

It sounds like the more experienced beekeepers on here are saying that after several days of winter clustering, they automatically re-orient during a cleansing flight?

    Re: Still too many mites

    Another positive testimonial for formic.

    OAV is organic as well.

    Re: Still too many mites

If someone has 50 hives, that's $1000 just to treat for mites.

Nucs sell for about $150-180, depending on your location.

that's 6 nucs just to pay for treatments.

    Re: Still too many mites

That sounds like a very expensive mite management strategy.

    Re: Still too many mites

It'd be one thing if MAQS and Formic pro were free. But they're not. If they were free, I'd consider trying these products.
  6. Re: Why the heck won't they gain weight (after ALOT of feeding).

I wasn't able to find any prices online.

Does anyone here know what sort of prices this schedule 77 syrup goes for, compared to regular sugar ?
  7. Re: How to make DIY Apivar for a 1/100th the price?

    I see.

Well, then disclaimer: this is just "food for thought" not something to actually do .
    :shhhh:
  8. Re: How to make DIY Apivar for a 1/100th the price?

    In theory:

No need to make, one can buy the powder, and heat it up a bit to make a strip, and then insert the pesticide when it cools down to a workable temperature.

    Most plastics begin to melt...
  9. Re: How to make DIY Apivar for a 1/100th the price?

One would assume that everyone here would know better than to apply apivar or Taktic/Amitraz ingredients with honey supers present?
  10. How to make DIY Apivar for a 1/100th the price?

OK, so long story short, Apivar is grossly over priced. At $3 per strip, and $12-15 per colony for a single treatment, it's the most expensive mite treatment available.

    However, this doesn't...

    Re: OAV or Apivar?

So basically what you're saying is that Apivar contains VERY LITTLE amitraz, yet they sell it for $3 per strip.

So home - made Amitraz strips, would cost very little.

    Now I really would like...

    Re: OAV or Apivar?

Is there any way to make apivar strips at home, without purchasing the strips?

That is, is there something I can mix amitraz with to make my own home made apivar strips?

    Re: Fondant

Shipping isn't inexpensive. Neither is buying it from Mann Lake, free shipping or not.
  14. Re: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times- wisdom and folly from 2019

I learned this year that it's more challenging than I would have expected to try to find another property to keep my bees.

    Still searching.

Re: I need to move my hives. When is best?

This is a good question. I would like to see if anyone here has an answer.

If I wait until very cold winter weather, and move a hive less than 2 miles, or so - within the same yard.

    Will the...

    Re: Fondant

$40 for a box is an excellent price. The best I could find outside of Mann lake, including shipping was about $50 per 50lb box.

If I was closer, I could drive to the supplier and pick it up for...
  17. Re: Advice on finding properties to place beehives?

Any other places to advertise besides craigslist that anyone here recommends?
  18. Re: Advice on finding properties to place beehives?

Any specific advice on what you mean by wording the ad correctly?

Most of the properties around here are residential, so how should I word it to convince a residential individual to put 20 hives...

    Re: Fondant

I strongly advise against Mann Lake.

Their fondant is ridiculously over priced.

    https://www.mannlakeltd.com/90-10-fondant-50-lb-22-68-kg

$80. That doesn't even include shipping.
  20. Can Palmer Style Double Nucs be used to produce Honey?

Couple of questions about Double Nucs:

    1. What material, and what thickness of the material do you use as a barrier to separate the 5 frames from one another inside of a "double nuc box"?

    2. ...
  21. Re: Advice on finding properties to place beehives?

    Thanks.

Do you think I should say anything else?

There's ALOT of residential and commercial properties in my area.

Farms exist, but it's not like central PA, or southern PA.
  22. Re: Advice on finding properties to place beehives?

What month do I do this? If I do it now, it's probably too early to talk about next spring, right?
  23. Re: Advice on finding properties to place beehives?

How am I supposed to dress, and what do I say when an angry person comes to the door after I knock?

"Hello, I want to see if you would mind if I place 20 hives on your property for a year?"

    Re: goldenrod smell

IDK what sort of goldenrod is in your area, but at no point did goldenrod smell like gym socks.
  25. Advice on finding properties to place beehives?

Long story short, I'm a "victim of my own success". Doubled the number of hives in my apiary within a short period of time, and based on their strength and mite loads, I suspect quite a few of them...
