Sticky: Re: GregV's Alternative way to keep (have?) bees.

    #3

Found a robbed out dead (the hive with blue markings).
Last time I checked - it felt as if they fighting back vigorously.
I taped them in and left.
Well, the issues were bigger, obviously....

Was that prime swarm that landed on my porch mid June.
    OK - dead.
I suppose I could have made a redundant split with them.
Well, decided to keep them as a honey resource and test them through...

    Frigid it is.
I think this year we had record snow fall for the.... October.
    :)

    The Halloween Winter continues.
    Really is winter here.
I rushed around today and threw blankets all on all my...

Re: Video - long Ukrainan hives - English audio

    I see you mean.
A micro nuc == "Big Ag"?
    What?
It is NOT a Big Ag.
If you sell 1000's of queens - that is a Big Ag.
20 micro-nucs in the small-scale sustainability project is not a Big Ag.
    It...

Re: Video - long Ukrainan hives - English audio

    Somewhat agree.
When the KTBH (and the variants) are sold for $$ with some built-in non-sense as if "natural" - I hate that.
Natural comb recycled Lang box is just as natural.
    Either should cost...

Re: Well this might change things!

I imagine, again, lots of facts and contexts just got "lost in translation".
    How do you trust?

You don't really know anymore, who/what generated this line (could be software-based random content...
  7. Re: A series of interviews from commercial beekeepers

    Not my idea of beekeeping.
Too much bravado for NOT enough money (at least the footballers make millions).
I would review the company image/practices with this in mind.

    My bad shoulder will...

    By cardboard I mean these:

I kept up to 4-5 full frame nucs in computer boxes - no problem.
Bees will chew the paper - a myth - this only means you have it configured wrong...

Re: Forget bees.... It is the cats.

GG, pretty sure in the comments of the original site they specified - no collar.
So the locals pretty much agreed - the "thing" was feral or maybe a homeless escapee.

    For sure, the feral cat...

Sticky: Re: GregV's Alternative way to keep (have?) bees.

Russ, I am surprised by how little attention is paid to the non-floral honeys in general here (a very common topic with Ukraine/Russia beeks).
Indeed, if you don't have a harsh and long winter -...

Re: Video - long Ukrainan hives - English audio

These all good ideas and comments, MSL.

Practically speaking (and not creating much custom equipment either) - I guess am pretty happy with 1-frame mating nucs based on a standard frames/boxes....
  12. Re: German Black bees in the Southeastern US actually Apis mellifera iberiensis?

Pretty sure, GG, the bees have been formed way, way before any of the recent Ice Ages.
Talking at least 50M years ago.
Bees have been around that long ago.
So, really, these recent Ice Age related...

In this case, Schumann and Forrest Down are Dane County WI.
There are many of these streets.

But, who knows how many are servals and their hybrids, and similar hybrids are running around (just...

    And here you go..
With my boy's help we finally got around to test a sample of honey from 2018 crop.
It is dark and it is still very much liquid, going into the second year - typical for non-floral...

    Re: Taste of Goldenrod Honey

    OK, you guys are correct.
    Some qualification are needed.
OK, this should be - "BAD FOR THE wintering BEES in locations with prolonged, continuous no-flight cold season (3-4 months and more). Also...

    So enough of the eulogy.

One unit down. RIP. But as MSL says - right down my alley.
I am set for this year - a very good crop (been giving away some gifts were they are due).
    Lots of bees...

    OK, the #1.

So, lost the over-wintered anchor in my 20-frame resource.
    Bad.
I guess, the open-mated red-dotted daughter of my line originator, yellow-dotted queen (rest in peace) turned no...

Sticky: Re: GregV's Alternative way to keep (have?) bees.

    Good luck then.
I will hold back the dry feed until later, to spend the time on the worthwhile units.
Some units will need it - for sure.
Once it is on, kinda a nuisance to get around it.

Sticky: Re: GregV's Alternative way to keep (have?) bees.

I was surprised to see how the bees preferred dry sugar over liquid feed in spring time.
All way to our crappy May (where you have dandelions peeking from under the snow - way too often).
    Guess...

    Well, 2am, Saturday...

Yes. Eventually, I will nail wintering the nucs.
Most of my hives will be classified as a "nuc" by an average BS reader.
    How it goes ....
    Nucs/small hives are cheap to...

Mb this weekend will toss blankets to the smallest nucs.
    Will see.

If you rush and insulate now, they may stick to the top too early and will stay up there all winter - not good.
    I don't want...

Well, I strategically scheduled a "work-from-home-after-hours" that day (after consulting the forecast).
    Spent the afternoon outside.
Just made in time and called the season done.

The thing is still an Art in many respects.
You know - the non-explainable, illogical component to it.
Like I said - the "black box"!
    Well, people argue......

    Some suggested the Savannah.
    Others the Bengal.

    Some darn hybrid I figure.

Forget bees.... It is the cats.

    :)

I just have to hang up an exchange from one of my local "social network" sites.
Few selected comments are on the pic.
Of course, I had to comment too - me being me.
