Re: Latshaw Apiaries - Inseminated Breeder Queens

Thanks Everyone! I am down to just banked Italian breeder queens.

I hope to finish up shipping in the next few weeks and should have a small number of established breeders, starting at $565...

    Re: Instrumental Insemination Equipment

Too many other commitments with the bee season gearing up! Danny, the instruments are coming along nicely. Just a couple of quick comments. I would be cautious with the multiple queen carousel. ...

    Re: Queen Rearing Article

The starters are simply free flying queenless units. I make them up an graft into them the same day. They are good as starters for a week, maybe two. It all depends on how they hold up. They can...

Re: Morphological measurements of our Queens

Perhaps the development of your opinion would benefit from additional reading of the research in this area. Just as it may not be clear to many why bone structure would correlate to milk production...

Yes, there are other researchers that have looked at this.

Re: Morphological measurements of our Queens

Michael, I do not remember seeing this. There was some work done looking at shorter development times and the variation within strains, but I do not recall it being tied to size. I has been a while...

Re: Morphological measurements of our Queens

Ian, there is a larger body of research on the topic of queen quality and the correlates mentioned by Tarpy. As he wrote, the measurements are not an absolute predictor but they have been carried...

    Re: Instrumental Insemination Equipment

Looking nice. Your glass pipette may be a challenge. The long gradual taper will be an issue to prevent the semen from mixing with the saline. I can't tell the volume if you have enough room to...

    Re: Queen Rearing Article

No the queen less starter is a stand alone unit as are the cell builders.

The number of frames of brood in the cell builders is somewhat dependent on their growth rate. In the peak of the season,...

Re: Morphological measurements of our Queens

I am not sure I would classify the measurements as bigger is better, but rather a relative quality assessment. The size is not used as a directional selection metric, but bigger queens generally have...

    Re: Queen Rearing Article

Ian, yes and no. There is variance between races, but overall those metrics are used because they do not change over the life of the queen whereas weight can change based on the queen's...

    Re: Instrumental Insemination Equipment

I want the flow rate high enough that I can begin just as soon as I place the queen in the tube and pick up forceps. It is with 15-20 seconds that she is pretty well motionless. Sometimes just a...

    Re: Instrumental Insemination Equipment

Don't overthink this... The flow rate isn't very critical, enough to immobilize the queens quickly. I run about 3-4 bubbles per second on a 3/16" line.

Re: Queen rearing schedule records and checklists

Along the lines of Mike's system, some operations just designate days of the week for jobs, then work backwards. Say if you want to catch on 18 days, work the system backwards to determine which...

Re: What day do you transfer cells into incubator?

I think you will like it. GQF has been around a long time. They build simple machines that work. Modifying the hatcher unit to your needs will be easier.

Re: What day do you transfer cells into incubator?

    Ian,

Is the incubator in the pic the actual one you purchased? It is the "setting" machine. The unit is fine but if you notice those three horizontal bars that hold the trays are stationary,...
