    Re: A Dreadful Sting...

It may just be a hand thing? When my hands get stung I react similar to that. It takes about a day for everything to get back to normal. When I get stung on the back, or arms, or on my nose I...

    Re: Beehives and summer shade

Thank you all, I had assumed (and hoped) this was the case.

I have the bees in my chicken run which is surrounded by 7 foot tall fences that are either solid or covered in shade cloth so bees...

    Beehives and summer shade

I know keeping hives in sun vs shade is a controversial topic. I don't want to open that can of worms in this thread.

After moving from acreage to town we got bees again. As space is limited the...

Re: How long does robbing last?

I have been feeding late afternoon and all the food is gone by morning. I was mostly doing it to help them get established.

I will look into robbing screens. I haven't heard of anyone using them...

    How long does robbing last?

It is spring in Australia, even though it is very dry I got a nuc a few weeks ago. As there is so little feed now and plenty of other more established hives around I reduced the entrance before...

Re: How long until you get relief?

Thank you so much for your replies!

This is the first time I have ever reacted at all so wasn't sure what to expect. I have a bit of a cold at the moment, and the end of the stinger broke off...

Re: How long until you get relief?

So, after a lot of research I started bee sting therapy. I was getting one sting every second week, then started to get one per week, and it halved the medication I needed to take. Each sting...

    Re: Ligurian bees

    Thanks little john,

my understanding was that ligurian were a subset of italian bees that were meant to be calmer. Kangaroo island claims that they have the only pure ligurian bees in the world. ...

    Re: Ligurian bees

A follow up question to this is are ligurian bees noticeably more inbred than other bees? Do their hives perform worse as a result of this?

    Ligurian bees

Has anyone kept ligurian bees? Are they noticeably more docile and easier to work than any other Italian bees? I would love to hear people's experience in keeping them, especially if they have also...

    Re: PVC periscope hive entrance?

    Hi ozbee,

Why had I not thought of that? It is so much more simple than what I had planned!

The observation hive I saw with the clear pipe entrance did have a lot of dead bees in the bottom of...

    Re: PVC periscope hive entrance?

    Hi tech.35058,

yeah 'weatherhead' may be a closer term. I want to get a pipe out the entrance a little, then go directly up until in line with the top of my fence, then horizontally until it...

Re: Building a top bar hive

Hi Yunzow, plywood is easier to get and cheaper than most timber I have access to. It should also be relatively simple to cut. From what people are saying, it may not be the best choice.

    Cheap ebay bee suits

What are your experiences with the cheap <$20 bee suits on ebay for a hobby beekeeper with only 2 hives? I assume they are thin and the bees can sting through them? If I wore a jumper underneath...

Re: Building a top bar hive

    Thanks for the reply.

Marine ply in Australia apparently uses glue that doesn't de-laminate as badly, but it still rots very quickly when wet. I will look up the youtube series but have a feeling...

    Re: Top bar hives

Yeah, I may end up borrowing some tools and making one myself. I looked at the price of timber, and the price of flat packed langstroth hives is similar so hoped maybe I could just buy one.

    If...

    Building a top bar hive

I have read a few places that claim you can make a top bar hive from marine grade plywood.

If the top is weatherproof and the outside is painted is there any reason that this would not work long...
