  1. A cove cutting jig for making bee box handles

I was not satisfied with the different handles I have on my bee hive boxes. But I found one that was quick to make and made a few minor changes to suit my purposes. I'm pretty happy with it and I'll...

    Re: Making a Bee Hive

Thanks. The arch top hive needed freshening up at the beginning of the season. I usually don't spend a lot of time making my boxes pretty, but that one is and exception.

    Making a Bee Hive

I had an emergency on my hands when I had to re-capture bees that had swarmed and left their hive. Having run out of hive boxes, I put them in a cardboard box and went to work in the shop making a...

  8. First time capture - an unscheduled Saturday task

I guess one bad thing about having such a great year is that they are filling up the boxes and at least one has now swarmed. Luckily I happened to look up at the right place at the right time and...

    Re: Making a Queen Catcher

I'm on the lookout for a cloth or nylon type of mesh. I already had the screen so I used it and it doesn't seem to be a problem when I tried it.

All true and a skill worth having. Of course, I am always making things in my workshop. This is just another thing.

    Gray Pollen?

I'm in the Seattle area and I'm used to seeing orange colored pollen come in - although I'm not sure what plant(s) it comes from. But today I noticed a darker, kind of gray colored pollen. I've never...

    Re: Making a Queen Catcher

If it was the same type would you mind my asking where you got it? I've only seen this in a picture, which is where I got the idea to make mine.

    Re: Making a Queen Catcher

Not very much work to make, but then I've got a pretty decent wood working shop. I can't say that mine is any better than a store bought.

    Making a Queen Catcher

I saw a catcher that I hadn't seen before and it looked pretty easy to make, so I made it. I made a video showing how I made it and used it. It gave me some ideas for future iterations that I might...

    Maple Harvest

We did a small harvest today so that we could separate the maple flow from the upcoming blackberry flow. We also for the first time used a heat gun instead of a hot knife to take off the caps and...

    How I'm Cleaning Old Frames

I'm cleaning some old frames and it's probably not worth the effort, but I do them a little at a time. If there are any better ways to do this, I'm all ears.

We get frames of what is mostly if not all "honey" made from sugar water. We keep a fair amount around just to put into the hives come winter. I'm wondering if anyone has information about other...
