Re: Crosshatched comb with brood in it

If it's cross combed u have to fix it asap. Brood or not u have to remove the cross comb and re hang it on a rescue bar before it gets worse.

    Re: is it safe?

First I would deal with neighbor one way or another to ensure it doesn't happen again. Secondly, if enough Raid was used to kill the hive then I would definitely not use those frames.

Re: When to check new hive

    10 days is good
  6. Re: Newbie. Three day Check and I'm a worried Bee mom

Just go back in and remove the cage carefully....then leave them alone. You'll get used to putting the bars back. Just be patient and gently bump the bees that are in the way-eventually they'll move....

    Re: lots of queen cells

If they are emergency cells (middle of frame, generally and smaller) consider a new mated queen. Emergency queens dont seem to the best imho. Just one of many options.

Re: When do they start storing honey?

Many people will tell you to feed heavily this year. That will also encourage comb building and stores. Lots of opinions on that tho.

Re: How often to inspect new hive

A viewing window is nice because you can check things out without disturbing the hive.... but to answer your question very generally would be weekly imho. But that depends on lots of factors but...

Re: dumped swarm on the ground

On Monday I picked up a swarm on the ground. I just cut the soil under the bees all around and just lifted chunks of sod full of bees into my container until I had them all. I gently put sod and...

    Re: Number of Entrances Open?

Less to guard/robbing would be the main thing now, especially if you are feeding. If the temps are surging Id open another. Then when the first babies hatch open a third. Thats how I do it but it...

Re: When to open/close screened bottom

My serious reply us that I dont have screened bottom boards and my bees are fine but keep reading and you will find just as many that swear by them.

    Conclusion: either works.

Re: Question: Best roof design for cold climates

My covers (lids) are hinged and are about a 4/12 pitch. If you put holes on either end it's like a vented roof or attic. Seems to work fine. I'm a contractor so maybe it's just me being complicated...

Re: Bees not taking sugar water

Imho very bad idea to have syrup hanging around near a hive. That just (may) invites robbing and other issues.
