    Re: Mountain camp vs. honey

What is this 5 pounds? I dump on a ten pound bag when I wrap end of October and in January I replaced what had been used with sugar bricks. Half or better haven't touched the MC. The major good I...

    Re: Mountain camp vs. honey

Nothing is uglier than a pile of twitching or barely moving bees that have eaten the last of their food, then the brood, then going/gone comatose. It is really ugly, expensive and I just don't care...

    Re: Mountain camp vs. honey

I have over the years lost many colonies with a hundred pounds of honey remaining but in the wrong place. The sugar on top solves that.

    Re: Mountain camp vs. honey

OK, Sugar is fity cents a pound and I don't want to chance losing $200 dollars worth of bees and bees cannot eat lids.

Re: Like sending bees to war

Glyphosate is only fatal to bees because it is so good at killing flowering weeds. I seriously doubt its toxicity in label usage.

    Re: 2019 Observations

The last two winters have shaken my conviction that I was expert at wintering bees or maybe reigned in my arrogance. Winter has indeed been challenging in severity during that period here. But...

Re: How cold in the hive?

I admit I do not know what brood minder is but an in the hive temperature of 55 sounds very healthy to me. I have no idea what the outside ambient temperature is but the bees have a mandate to keep...

    Re: Australia’s fires

Investigation why nearly 200 arson cases involving these fires! Hot, dry and a greenie with a box of matches makes life rough.

    Is Beltsville doing examinations

I remember Beltsville backing off its work ascessing disease and parasites free for samples sent them. What is the current status? Is Government or Academic labs doing these studies and assesments?
  11. Re: How long to feed bees with sugar water after package install?

Feeding the broodchambers full is indeed an excellent idea. I understand you only want one brood box, but consider shaking the bees off a drawn frame of brood and moving it above the queen excluder....

    Re: WIW Deeps

Literally cut your losses. Run both boxes and frames thru a tablesaw to make them mediums. Hopefully you are far enough north you can cut the frames when they are frozen hard. Use your oldest...

    Re: 2019 Winter solstice

I think along your lines, but I see people advocating putting on pollen patties at the beginning of non flying winter! Since I am in the chinook zone where we get wildly windy warm days thruout the...

    Re: Wrapping Hives and Ventilation

Don't worry about snow melting and running in your hive. Just not an issue. My bees winter nicely with the only ventilation being from the mid level 1" entrance bored under the hand hold on the...

    Re: Getting my first batch

Personally I would consider adding the super chamber when the outside frames are occupied by the bees and not fully expanded. Our apis Mellifera will swarm if they get crowded and I assume Cerana...
  17. Re: High certainty swarm prevention in dense suburb

At the beginning of your local swarm season, locate your queen and remove her and the frame of brood she is on from the parent hive. Select another frame of brood to go with her. Place those frames...

    Re: recommendations for winter wrap

In your southern winter, I might recommend wrapping in black tar paper to get a little solar gain. I would think moisture is your greatest problem. Some mountain camp sugar on the top bars would...

    Wintering in Montana

Well here in sunny Great Falls it is -5 F this Monday morning. We have a couple inches of powder on the ground and the ski slopes are opening record early. Supposed to be back in the forties in a...

    Re: Wintering in Montana

What you say is true as far as it goes. If the skunk has to stand up his soft nearly hairless belly is open to attack. I still eliminate every skunk I can. they are not native to this prairie and...
  21. Re: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times- wisdom and folly from 2019

Not much of the best of times thing here in Montana hobbyist land. Counting our cold fall, 22 F high today!, we have had the coldest year in local recorded history. Spring came late and was cold,...
  22. Re: Can Palmer Style Double Nucs be used to produce Honey?

When I started dividing deep boxes to run double nucs, Being cheap I used 1/8"tempered Masonite and easily ran five frames in them. I got the idea from a now disappeared site in Manitoba "French bee...
  23. Re: When do you add fondant/mountain camp sugar?

Mostly for my convenience, I wait to put on MC sugar until the bees are firmly clustered. A morning in teens or single digits. That way, No bees fly up and get in the dry sugar. when I lay my...

    Re: Weighing Hives

What your doing is indeed useful for determining approximate weights but I question the accuracy. Are you weighing the front or the back? In the far north, the back is usually much heavier than the...
  25. Re: Why the heck won't they gain weight (after ALOT of feeding).

You say short time between refills. How long after they are empty are refills? Keep piling it on as best you can.
