Re: Brushy Mountain is no longer???

Ah, that explains why Kelley asked if I wanted to use my Bee Bucks when I checked out from them last week! I thought that looked a bit odd.

Now if they would just ship . . . .
  2. Re: Brand New Soon to Be Beekeeper With Hive Question

Basically, don't paint any surface that the bees will touch, but paint everything else!

(jury's open on the mating surfaces between boxes. Paint on those can cause the boxes to stick together, but...

Swarms collected in 90277 yesterday, from a tree that overhung a pool. Some tricky ladder positioning, there!

Re: Cut Out Question From a Noob

Here's a photo of my bees pulling rubber bands out of my cutout, 2 years ago.

    Re: When to mark queens

I use a marking cage, and I think I've probably marked 10 queens in my life/career thus far. It still terrifies me, even though I don't think I've ever damaged one.

The closest I came was when I...

Re: Cut Out Question From a Noob

Once they start building/repairing comb, you'll start seeing them drag the rubber bands out the front door :D

    Re: Scouts or Residents?

I asked the homeowner to wait until after dark last night to cover that opening with clear plastic, and she did that. This morning she says there are "not any bees trying to get out" so it looks like...

    Re: Scouts or Residents?

Great idea!!! I'd totally forgotten about such a thing. It'd be like a trap-out. Thanks!

    Scouts or Residents?

A neighbor has bees flying in and out of a hole in her wall. Do y'all think these are scouts or residents?

    Re: Evicting a fresh swarm?

I would guess not. Bee-Quick (and all the honey-harvesting repellants) has a short lifespan, and that's by design.

As soon as the Bee-Quick evaporated, the scent of brood would draw the bees back...

    Re: Evicting a fresh swarm?

I just had an occasion to use this technique again, and it worked! We're 2 for 2 on this.

A panicked neighbor called because a swarm had moved into her block wall. Again. She'd brought an...

    Re: Driving with bees

I have had loose bees in the car with me after a swarm capture. This happens to me quite often. But they tend to hang out by the window, and they've never, ever bothered me while I was driving.

    Re: Driving with bees

I've never had a bee escape from a package. I've had a loose bee follow me (and the package) and attempt to get into the car with me, but I shooed her out before I closed the door.

    And it was dark...

  20. Re: hypothetical: can a beek split a large/full hive w/o knowing where the queen goes

I would also think that if you split the colony by taking every other frame from every box, that you'd be 99% sure of having eggs in both sides of the split.

It's entirely possible that the queen...
  21. Re: Home Made Swarm Traps: Any recommendations?

According to Thomas Seeley it's volume, entrance size, and location/orientation.

But if you're reasonably confident that you're going to catch a swarm, it makes sense to use something that doesn't...

    Re: Long-term bee repellent?

I've done that. There's a beautiful deep with 10 dawn frames, fully-stocked minibars, free WiFi, and some LGO, right there.

But I also want to actively discourage the scouts from exploring that...

    Long-term bee repellent?

This is the outside wall of the shed where I keep my unused bee equipment, so this whole area smells really nice. :D:D

But there are gaps where the wall joins that ceiling, as you can see, and I'm...
