Re: Laying Workers in Late Fall?

Bees are sensitive to the solar cycles, it could be that the LWís have shut down till after the winter solstice, or it could be absence of nectar flow too.

Re: Queen Flew Away Today (Nov 30)

Hope for the best, expect the worst. When queens fly they do a quick orientation, thatís why you want to stand by the hive with the lid off for a while. The scent is raising off the hive and you are...

Re: Two untreated hives in my bee yard

Another point to consider is Randy Oliver found that sick or weak bees will migrate to another hive thinking they’re doing their hive a favor.

Re: Well this might change things!

I have to disagree. With fresh comb it’s not a problem, they’ll work the wax to their liking. Older comb has to have the layers of cocoons broken away to form a ledge for the bees to start the cells...

Ya, thatís what I like about Mel Disselkoenís method (OTS) of raising queens. Make notches in the comb where the right ages larvae are and let the bees decide with little intervention.

Re: Well this might change things!

I think they’re missing the fact that the gene diversity exists with both the queen and the drones.

Re: Telling the bees - can be therapeutic

    My deepest condolences.
I talk to em all the time, mostly it’s “ just calm down, I gotta do what I gotta do and you having a hissy fit ain’t helping” lol.

    Re: iPhone Microwaves Causes Absconding

I don't own an iphone, but could i ask that someone who does, try the experiment (put an iphone on a hive) then report back, so we can put this matter to rest

Inadvertently I already have. If I...

  17. Re: Using battery w/inverter and ProVap 110: how many colonies can be treated?

I’m going to defer the mechanical calculations to the whiz kids lol. I can tell you to be cautious about using it without a charging source for the battery (after going thru a couple battery chargers...

Re: Think I messed up big time

It’ll be fine. Back in the days of scrounging and charring used equipment, I painted plenty of insides of boxes. Probably never killed a bee doing it.

Ya, it’s the trees that count. One black locust tree on a good year can equal a acre of clover yield.

The FA did it. All bees can do is herd them around.
  24. Re: I've Installed Motion Detector Lights, Now My Bees Come Out at Night

I use red leds at night, the brighter area light (rather than the headlamp) does attract bees so it must give off some UV waves

    Re: Frame rest protectors

I put them on with it mind that it saves the wood. But I’ve found that heating the area gently with a torch gets things softened up gets things off without hacking it down.
