Re: Cost of 3# package of bees in 1949

    In 1949 1 ounce of Gold was $35. Current price $1490.88. 1/10th $149.08.
Pre August 1972, USD was backed by Gold!

  3. Re: Is it feasible to control swarming without performing a spring split?

Adees lost how many colonies past winter?

Another thing, back in 2006. There was around 2200 operations taking around 1.5 million colonies to Almonds. Down to around 1600 operations taking 2...
  4. Re: Is it feasible to control swarming without performing a spring split?

Big picture. Survival of the fittest applies to Beekeeping Operations too. And the operations that are successful being Treatment-Free will continue despite what others are doing!

    To OP: Yes!...

Re: Do I really need to medicate?

Wait what? Total nonsense. If this beekeeper was truly TF, he would know how to deal with AFB, without treating or Burning the colony.

I've heard the EXACT same thing around here.
Hate to burst your bubble. Stop maintaining WEAK colonies. Yes, simple as that and no luck involved.

Re: Do I really need to medicate?

Since I stopped feeding in 2006, my colony counts spring to spring is more then previous year. There's NO "need to replace each year" lol. And forced to sell bees every other year.

Re: Do I really need to medicate?

    Hmm.
Guess I need 11 more years of not treating for anything. Also haven't fed a colony since 2006. And gets very tempting to wipe out the 3rd Deeps for around 11 Tonnes.

  13. Re: Making money as a beekeeper

Surely dont need more colonies, till I have a bigger building to efficiently process.
