Re: Treating to Become Treatment Free

Having a hard time picturing a better "stress test" of genetics than bringing a hive back from failure by re queening.

Re: Treating to Become Treatment Free

A pile of dead workers is just a pile of dead workers. There is no genetic impact one way or the other, live or die. A pile of unborn poor drones may have a genetic benefit, but a weak hive is not...

Re: Treating to Become Treatment Free

Manipulation is a form of treatment. A good logical treatment on the way to TF. A true feral is the only untreated bee, still waiting for one to land near me.

There is still a tone of; " I'm purer...

Re: Treating to Become Treatment Free

    Another heretic;

What's the difference in "stress" on the bees (or soft Bond) between hard treating and soft treating? Either way you are making them survive in the hope you can spot the cure. If...

Re: Lazy bees, too late to re-queen?

"Strangely, I will subscribe to the idea that "lazy" bees exist."
No argument from me. Bees that won't jump the gap to the next box or frame are quite common.

Re: Lazy bees, too late to re-queen?

Leave it to OT to see what I missed. Couldn't see the reducer for the bees.

    Re: How smart are skunks?

stay away from front of hive.

I was particularly impressed with this skunks technique of going under the hive and tapping on the bottom.

    How smart are skunks?

Posted on the local keepers group, stolen by me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zveDu-bIoWU

We are not the only species to work a bee hive.
  10. Re: Is it tougher and tougher to control mites with OAV?

" Even after 14 days, the density of the bees was still significantly higher than prior to treatment, indicating
a potential efficacy of at least up to 14 days."

Is this "on" the bees rather than...
  11. Re: Is it tougher and tougher to control mites with OAV?

But is it really a case of "adaptation to treatment" ? LJ keeping me in check with quick sloppy language.

Really can't say that it has happened. Am saying it will happen. Reproduction rate of the...
  12. Re: Is it tougher and tougher to control mites with OAV?

No matter the method of control, including TF, leaving any alive, and there are some left alive even if it is from your neighbors, creates a population vacuum. The most successful mite strategy in a...

Re: Testing a hive for defensiveness

Simply erupting is not a problem for me, following through with the warning is. Two seconds standing motionless after eruption and then workable is fine with me.

Chasers spread the word to other...

Re: Testing a hive for defensiveness

Agreed, they usually follow you before they get aggressive. Starts with only one or two bees. I will give the usual make sure they are not being bothered advice.

    Re: High mite load opinions

I do not need an excuse or permission to repeat failure. Been there, done that Bond foolishness.

Stress testing hives that fail 100% is not progress, it is just folly.

Re: OAV with honey supers/Fall Extraction Blues

    It's the public perception.
Nobody is buying a $10 jar of honey because they need it.
Buy local, support the farmer, save the bees, a bit of mystique.

More fragile than we want to believe....

"to keep honest people honest". But let's be honest, there are not that many honest people.

Honest: Only used as a clean up after another product.
Only used after mite count test.

    Re: OAV with honey supers

Use only in late fall or early spring when little
or no brood is present. Oxalic Acid Dihydrate
might damage bee brood. Oxalic Acid
Dihydrate will not control Varroa mites in
    capped brood.

  25. Re: Is it tougher and tougher to control mites with OAV?

It would not be unusual for a species to respond to increased mortality with increased fertility. The difference between EUs 30 years experience and that reported here maybe in methods. Supers comes...
