  1. Re: Combining a queenless hive with a cross-combed hive

    Ok, I guess.
I was really confused at first, because they started building drone comb and then changed it to worker, but I've seen their queen (very fat and yellow, not the one I installed). I'm...

    Re: Mouse guard for winter

Ok, great! I think I'll probably go with the top bar with holes in it, since I can never bend hardware cloth right. Do you think 1/2 inch holes would be small enough? I thought mice could get through...

    Mouse guard for winter

    Hi all,
I will be wintering one top bar hive. Its entrance is configured as recommended on Mr. Bush's website (http://bushfarms.com/images/TBHEntranceDiagramChrisGraham.jpg), but I can't figure out...

    Water source in winter

    Hi all,
It's my first year with bees, and I live in an area that gets pretty cold (zone 4). Do I need to provide an unfrozen water source all winter long? It seems to me that if the water is frozen,...
  6. Combining a queenless hive with a cross-combed hive

    Hello.
I have two (top bar) hives. One is strong but cross-combed, and I tried to requeen the other two weeks ago, but it ended up queenless. (I checked on it today: there is no brood except for a...
  7. Kill/save old queen when requeening?

I requeened a hive today. About three hours before putting the new queen in the hive, I found/caught the old queen and put her and some workers in a yogurt container (with some air holes, sugar and...

Re: major cross-combing, fix it tomorrow

I'll have to get some clips from walmart, but I'll do it this afternoon.

Thanks for the videos, they made me feel a lot better:)

Re: major cross-combing, fix it tomorrow

I didn't see any brood in either hive today, so should I wait a few days? Would that make the comb more solid?

    major cross-combing, fix it tomorrow

    Hi all,
It is 10 days since my first package install, and one of my two hives is all messed up. Four bars are all glued together, covered in combs at a ~60 degree angle from the guides. There's a...

    Top Bar Hive Stands

    Hello,

My packages are coming soon (by Thursday)! :)
I don't really know what to do about stands. I have two cinder blocks to put each hive on for now, just to keep them off the ground. Should I...

    When to requeen from package

    Hello,
I will be starting two packages this Spring, and will requeen with purebred Russian queens. When will be the best time to do this?
    Thanks,

    Re: Top Bar?

Does it matter how tall they are (vertically)?
And how do you make the guides, presumably to then glue/staple/tack to the bars?

Re: Direct releasing queens for packages

Thanks for the replies. I won't direct release. I will get some lemongrass oil to put in the hives though.
With the delayed release: check if it's a candy cage, if not put a marshmallow instead of...

    Direct releasing queens for packages

    Sealing gaps

I just finished building two Top Bar Hives (modified WAM design) and found a few small (1-2 mm) gaps where the sides meet the bottom. (I can see though them.)
I don't think the bees will like this....
