Welcome! It's a good hobby, but be ready to spend some time on it.
Well, the climate is very different here in Texas, so I have some doubts that my recommendations will work for you in Iowa.
The best way would be just to allow them to backfill their nest first, just do not interfere with the natural process.
This happened to my dad as well. Shotgun will help.
