No flow yet, we are about 2-3 weeks away from Apples. This colony is just dwindling fast with no brood while the others around it are building quickly.

I refuse to rob a good hive to nurse a dink....

Queen Not Laying Coming Out of Winter

I had some pretty significant losses due to animal attacks in outyards in Fall and a few weeks ago or I wouldn't even be giving this a second thought.

All of my overwintered hives are coming along...

My camo hives are painted with a green base and then a few swipes or spots of black and brown spray paint.

I use these boxes for swarm traps or in locations I want to keep inconspicuous.

Re: Forcing them down to the bottom box?

I did exactly that today. I pulled one of the middle bottom deep frames. I took the top 4 mediums off as a box then found the frame the queen was on with some brood. I placed that in the bottom...

Forcing them down to the bottom box?

Last fall I decided to try out some resource hives. Most of them were deep over deep but a few were medium over deep. All of my deep over deep nucs are now spoken for. I am just going to squeeze...

Re: Good source for #10 hardware cloth?

I found it at a locally owned hardware store. Several clerks had no idea what I was talking about but asked the 'old guy' that every real hardware store has. Him and I went to their outbuilding and...

Re: Weak Hive Coming out of Winter

Personally at this time I would do nothing but wait. Some strains are known for small winter clusters that quickly blow up when conditions are right while others winter with comparatively larger...

Re: Making Deeps or Mediums for sale?

I'm still trying to think how I would make medium nucs. My nucs up until this year have been for personal consumption. I can easily overwinter a simple 5 frame deep. I don't think a 5 frame medium...

Making Deeps or Mediums for sale?

This year I made enough extra overwintered nucs that I had a decent amount to sell. Without advertising I have them all sold. One of the potential buyers was interested in all I had but when they...

  15. Re: Overwintered nuc - definition is vague - advice requested.

I have never lost a colony that wintered in a single 5 frame nuc. Next winter I will be doing more of them to sell as well. I have given up on selling honey with Uncle and the lawyers demanding too...
  16. Re: Foundationless Brood boxes - Positives and Negatives

Small upper entrance and doing a mite treatment between Thanksgiving and Christmas should take care of your problems if everything else is good. I used Oxalic Dribble last year and am sold on it now...

Re: Simplest Way to Build Frames

Why not just use the old boxes for swarm traps? That's what I did last year with some gifted boxes that sat in a friend's barn since the '70s. I caught 2 swarms with them as well. Catching swarms...

    Re: Creamed honey question

That was the piece I have been missing, thank you! My creamed honey comes out just fine but has the consistency of cold butter. Spreads fine after you "scrape"some off with a knife.I could never...

    Re: Painting Supers

I use oil based paint and primer mostly. I paint way more metal than wood for various projects so I just use what I have.

Re: Is it genetic variance or variety?

Probably variance. These are sisters from the same hive. Clearly they have different fathers.

  22. Re: When to remove entrance reducer with variable temps

My approach is better 2 weeks late than 2 weeks too early. Wait until you see serious traffic jams at the entrance most of the time before removing it.*

    Re: VarroMed...something new coming

My thought is that I wish I hadn't gotten rid of all the dried eggs we had in the freezer to make space. Our chickens are prolific in the summer and at one point we had 90 eggs in the fridge.

I build my items in the winter when there is nothing else going on. I only use my spare time so the actual value of my time is watching sportsball vs playing in the woodshop. Economically from a...

    Re: VarroMed...something new coming

Thank you for the information! I had assumed that since it is the successor to HiveClean that it also was a sugar solution.

Hive Clean Ingredients: Water, Saccharose, Citric acid, Oxalic acid,...
