  1. Re: A couple of honey harvesting questions- NOOB

B1rd, this year I had a lot of cappings mixed with honey that I mashed up into the same type of gruel that you described. I let it sit for a day to drain in my incubator set at 100 degrees. The back...

Re: Maxant Bottling Tank: 16 gallon v. 25 gallon

Larry, I would love to see a picture. Just happen to have an empty beer keg or two floating around.

    Re: The Covid 19 Thread

Alex, Virginia has open primaries. This means that I can vote for the democratic candidate LEAST likely to win a general election. This year it was hard to decide, there were so many. News out today,...

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

GG, the ProVap has a 3/16" tube so a 1/4" hole works well. It is small enough that robbers do not seek it out. Even still, some bees do attempt to use it as an entrance. :(

I do not close off the...

    Re: Idiots Apiary

Welcome to the age of enlightenment. Beekeeping is fun, most of the time, but it is hard work.

Re: I need recommendations for an extractor

Maxant is the Cadillac of the industry. You can't go wrong if the price is right. Do you need a 30 frame extactor? I have 20 hivs and use a Maxant 3100P 9-frame (6 medium radially) extractor.

    Re: Bee watering station

My bee watering station is a leaky garden hose set on some concrete pavers. The bird bath with rocks in it that I have in the apiary works but needs constant refilling. The hose, I can just leave.

Re: Is anybody else having a hard season?

Lee, I can second that over here on the East Coast, things went pretty well. I had to start feeding in June also, but that is typical for my area. My 20 hives produced about 360# of tulip poplar...

    Re: Honey water percentages

My refractometer has a separate scale for moisture percentage. It is not the same as the Brix scale.

    Re: Honey water percentages

Omega, last year my capped honey tested out at 19.8%, this year it is around 17%. I have not tested all the buckets yet. I guess some years are like that. I covered a lot of the mason jars from last...

Re: Which inverter do you use for OAV?

I recently treated six hives with one of Johno's EasyVaps using the 400 watt inverter built into my Toyota 4Runner. Worked perfectly.

    Re: Very Thick Honey

Wow, sounds like some of Kamon's wife Laurel's honey caramels that I made last year https://www.beesource.com/forums/showthread.php?359071-Melt-in-your-mouth-Honey-caramel! . Think I was about 5 shy...

    Re: The Covid 19 Thread

Salty, don't hold your breath! Australia is looking more and more inviting to me and it doesn't get all that cold down under, or so I am told by a native Aussie.

    Re: The Covid 19 Thread

Better watch it quick. FB is doing the same thing. My wife has tried to share some posts posted by other health care professionals that question the numbers and certain protocols, only to find them...

    Re: The Covid 19 Thread

I concede that it could be for both of their benefits. But when my wife goes into a room to care for a patient that is full contact precaution, the suit, gloves, and mask are to protect her alone.

    Re: The Covid 19 Thread

Funny how the narrative has changed. Perhaps doctors should start masking the patients and then they can operate without their glasses fogging up? A mask is PPE. It is designed and intended to...

    Re: The Covid 19 Thread

I stand with Kamon on this. I am out in the country and masks are worn by maybe 50% of the people. I wear a mask in stores that have their own little version of the Gestapo minding the door, but...

    Re: Angled Comb on Bars

LJ is spot on with this advice. I do not have TBHs, but do use foundationless frames. It is important to check new bars as they are being drawn out for straightness before the bees get too far along....

    Re: Sugar Purchase

I just googled the Walmart in Lake Zurich. They have the Great Value brand pure cane at the same price as my local store for the 10# bags. The 25# bags are $8.88 each.

Re: New here - made really stupid mistake

Move the box with the frames under the box with the free comb. Or, do a cutout and get the comb rubber banded into some empty frames. The longer you wait, the worse it will become.

    Re: Sugar Purchase

I buy pure cane sugar from Walmart at a cost of $0.376 per pound in 10# bags. It recently increased from $0.320 per pound. I usually get 15 to 20 bags at a time.
  23. Re: Do you think there's life outside Earth in the Universe.

    Re: Very Thick Honey

I suspect the honey is about the right consistency. If you do not want to do crush and strain, maybe an inexpensive 2 frame bucket extractor would be a good choice. Honey does vary in moisture...

    Tomato Jam Recipe
