Wild raspberry bloom is in force.
Really nice patches are in my vicinity.

    Re: Tree ID

Of course this is not a Linden (Basswood) tree.
    :)

Indeed, this is some kind of a nut-bearing tree (Horse Chestnut very much likely).
  3. Re: Post swarm queen not laying, how long is too long?

Google on how long it takes a virgin queen to start laying.
    That would be your answer.

Sticky: Re: GregV's Alternative way to keep (have?) bees.

Doubt I got any diamonds, Russ.
BUT - have to have bees before any material can be introduced.
I got some queen material lined for the summer - need to park them somewhere.
    I also have a good...

Re: Trapping 2020 - success rate?

Wow; now that is some nano-swarm.
Never heard or seen anything that tiny.
At least a cup of bees has to be there to qualify it a "swarm".

Maybe some queen got confused during a mating flight...
  6. Re: What to do about filled out brood frames that are very wide!

The combs that are too wide - those combs are most likely just honey combs.
    Possibly drone brood also.
The worker brood comb can NOT be too wide.

And so - just take a long knife (serrated bread...

Re: Is my situation right for beekeeping?

What is of concern - spraying in the places where the bees go for their forage and where they collect water.
If the bees don't come to your patio for anything AND the beehives are physically removed...

    Re: Late swarm trapping

    Exactly.
My log traps stood outside all winter - no sweat.
Went out, checked/fixed what was needed/set in fresh lure - done.
Very important - screen from the mice.

    Sticky: Re: Treatment-Free Bungling 2018 - ?

Well, I was born into a bee yard and remember being around bees since I remember myself.
    I should know better.
And yet feels like I don't know much of anything anymore.
    :)

    But in all fairness,...

Swarms can be caught as late as late August.

    Just... wow.
    Good deal.
And most all probably will survive (unlike mine).

Sticky: Re: GregV's Alternative way to keep (have?) bees.

In the video - the beeks were called in to just take the bees and hives away (the family of the old beek who passed did no care to take over).
There are few follow up videos about those salvaged...

Re: Stupid bee math, and size of a bait hive

According to Seeley (The Lives of the Bees, pp. 117-118), he tested 10L, 40L, 70L (later 80L), 100L volumes.
Overall he neglected to more closely study the 40-60L range.
    And so the closest to...

    Re: Aggressive Bees Attacking!

Sounds like you can leave them alone for now and think about it.
As long as they don't really bother you - just let them be (my take).

Re: Stupid bee math, and size of a bait hive

40L - 60L volume range and don't think too much.
I'd err on the upper end of this range if have to choose.
This topic has been discussed in this sub-forum N times - search and see.

    Very briefly...

    1/8.
The back porch delivers 3 years in a row.

    PS: for the record, I don't count 2 swarms I took of the trees this season so far;
    those were...

Sticky: Re: GregV's Alternative way to keep (have?) bees.

Fun no-sound video (English subs available).
Basically, an abandoned bee yard, since about two years or so not touched.
Old beek was no longer able to.
Obviously, even before he could not really...

    Re: Smoker Fuel

    Yes. My bad.
There was something up there about a hole in the smoker bottom.
On a bad day something hot will fall out of that hole.

    Re: Swarm?

    Good deal, Trin.
Looks like I could use some black plastic containers too (about 50 liters) if in dire straits.
You have a good demo of that.

Re: Newby with Horizontal Hive Build

    This will take weeks.
Clearly, you only have enough bees to cover the 4 original frames - they will not just leave them behind and jump into some emptiness.
You need to have enough bees to cover...

Re: The Disposition Of Scout Bees

Like I documented just recently, at one time the "black" scouts were fighting the "yellow" scouts over the same trap.
Not just possible, but demonstrated - "the scouts may be from multiple...

    Re: A stumper: errant queen

I'd say this - "she could’ve blown out of the hive I was inspecting;".

    Why so categorically?

Entirely possible one of your hives is queen-less just about now.

Re: Is my situation right for beekeeping?

    No real issues.
Once there were anonymous letters from bad neighbors (shortly after they moved in and I even presented them with some honey) where they blamed their yellow jacket problem onto my...
