Late in on this thread, but must say that I'm well impressed when seeing HUGE numbers of 'nuc-sized' boxes on a flat-bed trailer which indicates to me that there's some serious honey-farming...
There's really no practical upper limit if you fully invert - here's an example of the gel which is eventually formed with a very high concentration of sugars:
...
Quibbling ? No - just trying to be helpful ... :)
By fully inverting, I have raised the concentration to somewhere in excess of 3.5:1 - but I only did that as a test 'just to see what was...
It's only super-saturated in terms of sucrose - so you might want to consider inverting it - that way you will have a glucose solution which is highly 'contaminated' with fructose, and vice-versa....
Greg, thanks for the above link.
That video has been running around inside my brain overnight :) It reminds me of Doolittle's '6-frame' Hive (which was actually a 15-frame Long Hive, in which...
One of Britain's principal supermarket chains (Tesco) has just had to remove all of it's own brand 'Natural Honey' from the shelves, after Inspectors detected unacceptably high levels of sucrose in...
I wish only to correct your errors.
You are very persistent about this - I can only conclude that your knowledge of biochemistry must be limited. BTW, I said "routinely" - not "sometimes".

Brilliant ...
Tongue and groove box construction with battens on the outside, bicycle-wheel carriers - love it. :)

I'd use it - but then I happily use pallet-wood to make boxes. :)
I find that such wood lasts well, providing you can keep the rain off it - which is why I paint my boxes, and provide all hives...
That's quite an assertion ...
I hope you'll agree that the human body has a need for a daily intake of Vitamin (Vital-amine) C - otherwise known as ascorbic acid - and, when ascorbic acid is...
Not so - Vitvitsky wrote that in 1835. Even 75 years later-on, people were still using horses and carts to transport hives (and people) around:

I stumbled across this a few days ago and thought of this thread ...
So, the idea of less productive hives - but a lot more of them - might be worth considering. :)

Hi Greg
The reason I think that touching frames are less than ideal, is due to the inevitable build-up of propolis, whether this be between top-bars or Hoffman side-bars, which gradually increases...
Sorry for the delay in replying - that hive now houses up to twenty 14x12 frames (or a mix of 14x12's and Deeps). The provision of entrances at both ends came about largely by accident: during it's...
That's the one - thanks :)

I agree. VOA in winter is pretty-much like sprinkling flea-powder over your dog - it's not going to matter much whether you use one packet of powder or half-a-dozen - the excess is just a waste of...
The basic 'up and over' entrance has become known as a 'periscope entrance' and features in the Dartington Hive design and it's plastic equivalent (the name of which I've forgotten). Maybe other...
With regard to the Layens Beehive, what follows here are a couple of 'clarifiers' of errors, revealed just as soon as I discovered them, as I wouldn't want to continue misleading anybody ...

I've never had that much of a problem with the girls drawing-out comb below the top-bar - my problem used to be what happens above the top bar.
For a while I tried 'soft' Crown Boards (Inner...
Thanks JWP - you're much quicker on the keyboard than me :) As I'd already written this, I'll let it stand ...
You're obviously 'not getting it'. 'It' being the distinction between a particular...

One of the most common 'magic bullets' these days for headaches is Ibuprofen ... but one of Ibuprofen's side effects is ... yes, you've guessed: headaches.
So you have...
I concur - an excellently produced video of the Doolittle (grafting) Method, using a Cloake Board to start the cells.
In contrast, the Miller Method is 100% graftless:...

The figures often cited (X mg/litre of air etc) by Health & Safety organisations may be appropriate inside a building, where any contamination will be...
FWIW - in the chemmy lab we usually talk in terms of 'molar' solutions - a 'mole' being the mass (or weight) of a chemical equal in grams to it's molecular weight. So - if we take a chemical with a...
Not at all - forget how the syrup was made up, because now it's a solution: of X number of grams per litre. By adding an equal volume of water you create X number of grams per 2 litres - i.e. half...
