    Re: Motorizing an extractor

I am not sure if an ice cream maker motor would be fast enough, and it doesn't have any speed control.

I have heard of people finding old treadmills (on craigslist, ect) and using the motors and...
  3. Re: Penn State "COMB" project posts Dec 2019 update

I am wondering how the results will change over the next year when the genetics from the "feral, TF survivors" queens get "watered" down due to swarming and new queens mating with the "random" drones...

    Re: Queenless in November

I do not think she will mate. I suspect the hive will collapse before spring from not creating any new workers all winter. The brood production slows way down during the winter, but it only stops...
  6. Re: Advice for sealing concrete floor extraction room

My brother sells paint, and cleaning the floor extremely well is the key to getting floor paint to work well.

As long as you are not collecting honey off the floor (which you really should not be)...

Re: What are the bees doing all over my house?

I ordered this when I ordered sugar, it should last me several years unless I spill the bottle

Re: Maximum Crop & Earthquake Proof Hive Stand

I think I have seen this before about you two, but you act like an old married couple.

Maybe find him somewhere to volunteer?

  11. Re: Will bees pollinate fruits an vegetables inside a.....

Out of curiosity what are you trying to do? Could you use a larger mesh like chain link or remesh?

This is what I was thinking of, I had to look for the name...

    Re: Black Friday Sales

I was also thinking that several places have big sales in March.

For the people who have been around a while, are the black Friday or the march sells usually better?

Re: Two untreated hives in my bee yard

I would put robber screen son his hive ASAP to keep your bees out of his hives when the crash and they start robbing.

I would also recommend pushing him to treat, but that is harder to do.

Re: Planning for my first bee's come spring

That sounds like a good location. Mine are not in a great location for sun, but I chose the location to avoid annoying my neighbors.

    Some other random thoughts:
    * if you dye the syrup green...

Re: Think I messed up big time

I would be inclined to put tape on the edges of the boxes rather than sanding them. I tried sanding paint of the edges of some of my boxes and ended up with gaps that the bees filled with lots of...

Re: Bees still crowding bird baths

I would keep doing what you are doing. My bees have been getting in my neighbors hot tub, and I am trying to stop this. If you are tired of dumping hot water in it you can get a electric heater.

    Re: queen excluders

I have a few around. I have found them useful when trying to find a drone only laying queen or when I did not want a queen to leave a hive (box I set up for swarm catching).
  18. Re: Is there a problem in giving bees a bit of fermented honey?

One of my coworkers told me a few of his bees took some wine one day, then they were a bit drunk. It sounded like they only got a few drops of wine and only the bees that drank it got drunk.

    I...

    Re: queen excluders

I prefer metal. I can take a blowtorch to it or throw it on the grill and burn it clean
  20. Re: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times- wisdom and folly from 2019

Another random one this year. I also learned not to eat fresh crispy cream doughnuts on the way to the club meeting with a honey competition and then handle jars of honey. I got dinged for finger...

Re: Front Range roller coaster - 2019

That was in July. I pulled the top 4 boxes off the big hive to extract. That hive weighed 375 lbs at one point this summer. Going into winter the stack was down to 5 boxes, I probably should have...

Re: Front Range roller coaster - 2019

I agree with that. The entire spring/summer/fall seemed to be running 3-4 weeks late this year, then winter showed up early and hard.

About the only thing that I have different from the lists...
  23. Re: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times- wisdom and folly from 2019

Best was having my overwintered hive do well all summer and getting 11 gallons of honey out of 2 hives (and leaving them 75+ lb each).

Worst was losing those 2 hives due to MAQS failure resulting...

Re: Front Range roller coaster - 2019

I think my other 2 hives are in better shape. They both were a lot stronger going into winter and have plenty of stores (2-3 mediums full of honey/sugar). I had MAQS fail badly in the 2 hives that...

Re: Front Range roller coaster - 2019

2 of my 4 hives crashed during the cold snap last week. When I opened the 2 hives that were not flying today I found queen cells in one with a dead cluster, and the second one had a small dead...
