    Cooling Vests

I've heard a few beekeepers talk about wearing a cooling vest under their jacket. Does anyone know the best kind for beekeepers?

The MMK heats the hive to 106 for 2.5 hours. Bees maintain hive temperature of about 96 if I remember correctly using evaporative cooling with water they bring in the hive.

Re: Trapping 2019 - success rate?

Put out 6 traps and so far have 5 swarms. One was in my yard though, at lest it didn't leave. All of my swarms have been small this year and my bees started swarming several weeks before I got hits...

    Re: Virgin Queen

Thanks for the heads up. That would be an invitation to swarm with the just introduced queen. I will cut out any queen cells or cups they pull.

    Re: Virgin Queen

Thanks for the replies. My idea was to use the frame of eggs to determine if I had a virgin queen. I have previously looked for a queen and found queen cells, no queen or eggs, (cut out all but...

    Virgin Queen

I have a hive that swarmed and I can't be certain how long ago. I would like to get a queen laying ASAP in hopes of getting at least some honey from this hive this year and would requeen it if I...

    Moldy Comb

I left two of my traps out last year that didn't catch a swarm too long and my old frame of comb got very, very moldy. I may not have dried it good after spraying with xentari. If I had plenty of...

Re: How long does robbing last?

Make yourself a robbing screen. It will take the bees in the hive a few days to find the new entrance but they will eventually get it down. Robbers will still be trying to get in at the bottom...

    Re: freezing some honey frames?

Would freezing for 24 hours not kill the SHB eggs, then store where more SHB couldn't get to them?

    Re: Outside Cover Wraps

Go to a heating and air supply store and buy a pair of "hand seamers". Basically a pair of pliers with 3" wide plates for jaws. You can clamp the jaws around light guage metal and make a pretty...

Re: What kind of bee is this?

I pulled a map of your area and it shows you in eastern Tennessee. I may be wrong but I don't think Africanized bees have got that far north. I'm in NW Georgia and no one in our bee club has...

Re: Maple bloom has begun in Louisville

Noticed a red tinge to the maple in my neighbor's yard today. Bees having been bringing in pollen for the last several days when it was warm enough to fly. NW GA.

    Virus Research

It seems the consensus now is that the viruses carried by Varrora mites are one of the main causes of colony losses in our bees. All the research and discussion I see however, is focused on...

    Just Joined

I have been reading posts for a few days and decided to register. Looks like a good, informative place to hang out. Currently have 3 hives. This is my second try, lost the first ones two years ago.
