Sticky: Re: Can't stop the EFB.

Random question, do you have a bunch of pooled water in or around old equipment that the bees drink off of?

Re: Candlemaking - a personal video

I have an 8" taper and an 8" colonial taper from Mann Lake. I may have stored them incorrectly at some point. I may try warming them up and trying to straighten them back out.

Re: Candlemaking - a personal video

great video Dan! How do you keep your taper molds from getting bent? Mine all start out great, but soon start warping pretty bad and make slightly curved tapers.

Re: any tips on forest beekeeping?

Most everything will be fine, just keep an eye on the SHB levels in late summer. May want to have extra mechanical traps in the hives.

    Re: Compatibility Between Manufacturers

Something random to add, nuc widths are all over the map, from 9" as listed on the beesource "build it" site, all the way to nearly 10" from some Amish makers.

Re: Hive density in an urban environment?

Currently there is nothing around them for about a hundred yards or more in every direction. If and when they install the urban farm, there could definitely be a problem, though. I'll maybe try...

Re: Hive density in an urban environment?

The fringes are now all covered with kudzu unfortunately... There is very little cover. I could maybe paint the concrete with white paint? Another option is to let the kudzu start spreading around...

It sounds somewhat similar to your apiary with 25 hives. Definitely not an issue with neighbors, it's on half of a huge concrete pad.

Re: Hive density in an urban environment?

I completely don't understand your question. Why do you have as many hives as you do??

Hive density in an urban environment?

How many hives can a single apiary support in a fairly urban environment? I know it depends, but have you guys kept any fairly large hive numbers in the city? I have an apiary on an urban farm...

    Re: Fall Syrup Ripening Consideration

It's okay to go into winter uncapped. You will see girls flying out in nearly freezing weather trying to find water to dilute the capped stuff anyways.
  14. Re: Feeding - when and when not to and what can be given

There is never a concern for starvation when there is a ton of food available. Not sure I understand the question.

    Beekeeping on a golf course?

Hey guys, I have an offer to keep bees on a couple golf courses, but I always assumed they sprayed heavily for mosquitos and applied pesticides to the greens and fairways. And assumed it would nuke...

+1, if it were some sort of emergency, sure. No need to fret about the current situation whatsoever. :)

Re: MAQS - Full Dose /Half Dose

I did half treatments on all the hives this summer when we had a break in the weather and did not notice any harm done to the bees or queens even at the top end of the temperature range.

Re: Has anyone tired this on Small Hive beetles

    Just an interesting observation...

Any time I burn a beeswax candle outdoors, a few small hive beetle inevitably show up. Any way to make some sort of similar attractant in a trap?

    Re: dark honey cap

As bees walk over the fresh white capped honey, they will track more and more dirt over the combs, darkening it as it ages. You will often find older capped honey in the broodnest that is dark...
