Re: Over winter in single deeps

Overwintering in single deeps implies nothing is left on top. If you are having lots of swarming issues with singles, I would consider using two brood boxes.

Re: What do i call my queens?

I agree and I have heard that the name “Saskatraz” is trademarked. I would do some research before using that name in any advertising.

    Re: A hive turntable ...

Great idea. We use a custom bottom board with removable blocks on both ends. This allows us to switch the entrance from one side to the other very easily.

  6. Re: Queen pheromone strips in mating nucs

We use Tempqueen whenever possible but I have noted that if the mating nucs are held in a cool dark place such as a garage for 3 days they will stay with or without Tempqueen.

Re: Alley Method for Rearing Queens

I hear the same thing over and over and over and over again about someone else’s method involving “notching”
I will stick to grafting as well.

    Re: NUC QUESTION

I know of a few suppliers in Northern Maine where you can get Nucleus Colonies or you could get some packages and re-queen them with good local stock. Both of those would be a MUCH better option...

    Re: Vermont Bill Before Legislature

She is VERY active within the community and does a lot of outreach and education. I was talking with her the other night about these proposed changes and support them 100%. The increase in fees is...
  13. Re: Priming queen cells with purchased royal jelly

No thanks. We use a very small drop of distilled water in each cell cup. If I wanted extra Royal Jelly at graft time, I would either double graft or store my own. IMO, it is much more important to...

    Re: Banking Queens

I would also look into making your candy with nulomoline. It is available from Kelly’s.

    Re: Queen cell requeening

We have done it many times by putting a protected cell (JZ-BZ cell protector) in the honey supers.

    Re: Verifying Hygienic Queens

Our testing protocols require that the bees remove 95% or greater of the brood from our freeze kill assay in order to be utilized in our breeding program. Testing for Hygienic behavior and VSH are...

  22. Re: Nosema treatment for northern beekeepers ?

Same here. We look to what the Tech Transfer Teams are recommending as well as our current and retired State Apiarists. We have never treated for Nosema but are vigilant about getting colonies...

Re: Best way to ship queens

We have had good luck with USPS for the last few years. Locally we send them priority and they almost always end up at the post office the next morning. When shipping outside of the State, I ship...

    Re: Your favorite queen supplier

I agree with this as long as they have good stock to graft from. It seems that there is a sudden push for everyone to start making their own queens and to learn how to graft. What I don't see...
