    Re: Pennsylvania

I checked the trap for #4. It is occupied. Less than 24 hours after I put it out too. 17754

Re: Hive Identification (People and Bees)

I just put a staple into the hive body right above the opening. The attached picture is something I'm experimenting with this year inspired by Ian. 3 6-frame nucs with 2 10-frame supers on top. I...

Re: Giving the Nicot a Try

Looks good Ben. I've decided to hold off until after locust flow which should begin next week. I'm still catching swarms as well.

Re: Hive Identification (People and Bees)

I started stapling a letter and number on this year. Overwintered hives get a letter, swarms get a number. 300 of various colors for $1 Next spring I can do it all over as hives get broken down or...

    Re: Pennsylvania

Congrats, you broke the seal for the season! Hope you get many more to follow.

I brought home 2 more last night. I'm almost out of gear for traps since I'm using 8 frame deeps and just letting...

Re: Giving the Nicot a Try

Thanks LJ. I guess the long & short of it is that regular grafting is much more efficient and that the magic box is for someone who can't or won't use regular grafting.

Re: Giving the Nicot a Try

But, will they clean out the unused cups that had an egg if I just pull the frame and let them dry out? Seems a huge waste to use 110 new cups every time if I'm only pulling 20 or so for queen...

    Giving the Nicot a Try

I ordered a knock-off mostly for the hair roller cages. I usually use JZ-BZ for grafting but sometimes getting them out the day it calls for can be sketchy with my work and family schedule.

    For...
  9. Re: Did I catch a swarm? or is it just massive robbing?

Are you leaving it in that yard or moving it? If you are leaving it there waiting 2 weeks isn't going to hurt anything other than your patience. If you are moving it to another yard you can pick it...

I have overwintered plenty of 5 frame Nucs in PA and never lost a single one.

Re: Trapping 2020 - success rate?

Brought home 3 so far in the last week. I received a text earlier that I may have a 4th which moved into a spot I just reset a trap on yesterday. Strangely, the spot that I caught 2 last year has...

    Re: First time grafting

I just came in from grafting. Like Grozzie2 I keep going back to the chinese tool. Today I tried the new german stainless tool I just bought. After ruining about a dozen larvae trying to get them...

JWPalmer hit the major points so I will not rehash what he stated. I would also add, there are no internet experts. Or, rather, there are plenty of self proclaimed internet experts that will tell...

Re: pollen sub patty tweak question

Invert sugar doesn't dry out. I don't make pollen patties but have used it for other things. I know some have used it in patties.

    Re: Pennsylvania

Caught one at 17815. Moved in this morning. Not sure when I will get over to bring it home and set a new trap.

It's been a good year so far. After 3 empty years I started using old brood comb...

Re: Queen Not Laying Coming Out of Winter

Final update on this situation. I checked on this hive last night. They are currently in a 5-over-5 double nuc setup. She has 3 of the frame in the bottom box laid solid with capped brood. I am...

    Re: Pennsylvania

Another at 17754. No idea of size yet since it was late yesterday when I found them and they are moved in. It was the trap that I had expected to be occupied 1st. Bringing them home tonight and...

    Re: Pennsylvania

1st one of the season for me. Huge one in 17754. I had just put the box out this morning around 10am and went back near the end of my day just to check around 3:30 and there was a cloud. I took...

I am trying out Ian's multiple queen system this year on a limited basis. It is 3 6-frame nucs pushed together under 2 10-frame supers with a queen excluder over the nucs.

    Sounds like a good...
  23. Re: Northeastern/Mid-Western Weather roller-coaster 2020.

Calling for 29 here. The only thing I'm concerned about is the young blueberries I just planted. My bees should be fine. If they can't survive a cold snap like this I need to find different...

You should be fine. The only ones that fly are the foragers. Your new hive is full of nurse bees that will keep the brood warm. The foragers all went back to the original hive. Over the next week...

I would also use something black and block it from the inside so it looks open. You could really have some fun with this Karen.

I'd probably do fake inspections too.
