  1. Re: funny story, really short on facts but high on speculation

About Michael Thiele in the 1st post video. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-c...-idUSKBN1X31CE

We invited him to speak at our bee meeting. His talk was over the top groovy, hippie, organic,...
  2. Re: How much honey could one expect from one hive? Spring

    >If you have single deeps with excluder and 2-3 medium supers on top, could you expect 80-100 lbs per colony? I have 12 and am thinking I'll get 1200 lbs roughly. if sold at $13 a pound should...
  3. Re: Can Palmer Style Double Nucs be used to produce Honey?

I do not want to denigrate your suggestion, but the problem I had with this every good idea is that when we go to separate the two sides, there are patches of brood in the divider which we have to...

    Re: Help with Comb Honey

To get foundation drawn above an excluder you need a strong hive in a good flow. I place foundtionless frames between drawn combs and am very successful. Foundation will work between drawn combs also...

Re: Wintering Inner Cover from Mann Lake

I did it wrong. Don't let the bees near the insulation. They chew it big time.
  6. Re: A series of interviews from commercial beekeepers

You don't often see videos of big operations with most workers in short sleeves or no shirt. Looks and sounds kinda cult like.

Re: Maximum Crop & Earthquake Proof Hive Stand

Actually as of this afternoon I am as much impressed with myself over our 8/3/19 born home grafted queens as I was earlier over the 8X8 hive stand. Five frame divides made end of July are now 10...

Vertical wire foundation also requires horizontal wires and slow fist time spinning.

Re: best way to 2:1 feed in-hive?

I also find frame feeders to be the most effective. No syrup leakage like inverted jars, no rain leakage like jars. No drowning robbers like top feeders. Easy to fill, and seem to stimulate the bees...
  10. Re: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times- wisdom and folly from 2019

    >2) Bad: Ran Down quiet suburban street in full bee gear being swarmed by hot hive at 11pm - had to run about 3 city blocks before bees left me alone. Definitely Africanized.

Re: Maximum Crop & Earthquake Proof Hive Stand

No. It is a poor access site for us and was for them. The stand is on a few inches of clay fill they left behind. The beams were just left behind in a pile of lumber. We installed them level which...

The client will scream when she gets my invoice for this stand, artwork might make her go over the top. Although...if you can afford a personal beekeeper, you can afford some artwork. I should...

Maximum Crop & Earthquake Proof Hive Stand

I get so sick and tired of Charlie and Ray bragging about their ant proof hive stands. I just don't have ant problems that worry me. But out here in California we have earthquakes and bears. Global...

    Re: Treat Package Before Installation?

I have been treating all new swarms, packages, purchased nucs, and divides with Apivar immediately upon starting them. And feeding them one gallon Prosweet. The effect of these two crutches is...

    Re: Oxalic Dribble Method

I did a single and double dribble on 150 hives in 2017 as per Randy Oliver and still had 60% winter losses.

I don't think johno should turn a thread on dribble into a plug for his vaporizor.
  17. Re: Down with Double Deeps! Fess up, you alternative hive-style followers!!!!

Thank you. I am not that old, only a youthful 68. I first worked bees in 1968, had my own hives in 1970 or '71, and up to 60 hives by the end of the '70s.

This movie shows my then new Brother...

I think Brother Adam melted down those old black combs. Many beekeepers do not use black brood comb for honey production.

Circulation Brother Adam style was THE thing I did not manage to do.

  21. Re: Down with Double Deeps! Fess up, you alternative hive-style followers!!!!

Are we talking frame depth or box depth? The jumbo frames I have used for 40 years are 11 1/4" deep.
  22. Re: Down with Double Deeps! Fess up, you alternative hive-style followers!!!!

A lot of people use "1 and a 1/2's". That is a deep and a medium as the brood chamber. I use those and single deeps, double deeps, all mediums, 10 and twelve frame jumbos with 11 1/4" deep frames....

Re: Hands off Beekeeping.....for the most part.

I have one three visit yard.

    1. Spring inspection, place supers and supered bait hives.
    2. Harvest and place Apivar.
    3. Remove Apivar.

I should use Formic Pro and get it down to two...

    Re: Frame rack

I don't build frames until I have a bee box to put them in. The beginners in the club are always talking about buying plastic totes for frames at Costco. Mine spend their lifetime in a bee box.
  25. Re: How to store pulled Supers for the winter in warmer climates.

Use queen excluders, keep your honey super frames brood and pollen frames. In my area wax moths do not infest white combs, even when they have had cycle of brood in them. I have 45 year old...
