  1. Re: OSBN - Opening the Sides of the Brood Nest

Does this work in Northern, cold climates, like Maine, or New Hampshire?
  2. Will lack of early morning sun negatively affect an apiary?

Long story short, there's this location I'm in the process of setting up. I realized that there's a big pine tree that faces northeast, and pretty much blocks the sun until, I don't know exactly...
  3. Re: Removing and then returning queen to stop swarm....

OK, so the assumption is that you will do this, that will take roughly a month.

    Now you're around May 6th.

So now OP has a combined colony that is probably loaded with bees, on May 6th. How...
  4. Re: Removing and then returning queen to stop swarm....

Wait, where do you stick the corks? Or you mean you just drill some holes in the side of the hive and stick plywood in there?

I think that's a good way to damage your equipment and it wouldn't...
  5. Re: Removing and then returning queen to stop swarm....

Honestly, if you don't make a substantial split, you'll just be delaying the swarm.

I've been there, tried to cut out the queen cells, tried to make "mini" splits, none of it did anything other...
  6. Re: Electric fence charger - how do I charge my battery, and how long will it last?

    OK, last question.

What is the amount of Amp hours that one needs on a deep cycle battery, assuming I have the 20W solar charger?
  7. Will the coronavirus negatively affect the beekeeping industry?

I noticed that the price of NUCs in my area is down quite a bit recently because of the Wuhan coronavirus/Wuhan pneumonia/Chinese virus, or whatever you'd like to call it.

    What are your...
  8. Re: EFB Pro-active treatments - Now or wait until later in the season?

In my case, Destruction by fire is 100% useless with EFB. Quarantining used equipment wouldn't even work.

If I did destruction by fire, my neighbor down the road will just re-infect my...
  9. Re: I believe the flow has begun, Atlanta area

The daffodils aren't even blooming yet in one of my locations in PA.

You folks are a solid 2 months ahead of us.
  10. Re: Double screen board requeening method

I have a question for your question: Is there an easy method for making a double screen board that doesn't require all the special entrances, but still gives you the same results? Or are these...
  11. Re: Electric fence charger - how do I charge my battery, and how long will it last?

    They're like $20 each.
  12. Re: Electric fence charger - how do I charge my battery, and how long will it last?

I have a 120 amp hour deep cycle battery, it's not an automotive battery.

Sounds to me like my best option here is to buy a solar trickle charger.

I found one on amazon that does 15 watts for...
  13. Re: Electric fence charger - how do I charge my battery, and how long will it last?

I don't have a solar charger, just a battery and a battery powered energizer. Solar chargers of good quality that can keep out the 500 pound bears we have up here are $600+, and that's just too...
  14. Electric fence charger - how do I charge my battery, and how long will it last?

Long story short, I have an electric fence energizer that is battery powered.

I also have a 120 amp hour 12 volt battery that I can attach to the charger and help it deter bears.

    Two questions,...

Re: Amazon Oxalic Acid Killed my Hives!

I used that exact product a while back with horrible, horrible results.

I would strongly recommend NOT buying that brand from Amazon.

Look, if people want to believe the government websites about OA dust, and that N95 masks don't work - you are entitled to your opinion. These same goverments were trying to tell the public that N95...

There's literally a federal law right now making it a crime to gouge prices due to the coronavirus.
  18. Re: Bee-L member requesting Beekeepers donate their extra N95 Masks - DON'T DO IT!!!!

It's a challenging situation, but we need our over the age of 50-60 beekeepers healthy, especially if they are commerical beekeepers. Our food supply depends on it.

    I'm just a random poster...
  19. Re: Bee-L member requesting Beekeepers donate their extra N95 Masks - DON'T DO IT!!!!

They will need N95 masks for their own lives and protection. The Wuhan coronavrius is highly contagious and spreads in the air (droplet spread).

Italy is literally not even treating people over...
  20. Re: Bee-L member requesting Beekeepers donate their extra N95 Masks - DON'T DO IT!!!!

In my opinion, We will absolutely be screwed if our experienced over the age of 50 commercial beekeepers start to succumb to the Wuhan Coronavirus.

In the long term, we need our commercial...

  24. Double nuc entrance locations? One on either side, or opposite entrances?

Question about double nuc entrance locations:

For double nuc boxes, if the entrances are on the far left and far right of the box, will this create orientation issues?

Or is it better to just...
