Re: Getting follower board to fit

Mine is not super tight, but could you maybe put the screen mesh in loosely against the back of the hive and press your current board against it to get an imprint? Then press your fingers or a tool...

    Re: Splitting a Top-bar hive

Even though it's not capped? I could feed the nectar back to them, I guess?

    Re: It’s raining drones

Did you ever figure this out? You can look at pictures of "spent" drones to see if these ones had mated with a queen or not.

Re: I found a queen cell in my hive today

Almost certainly they swarmed. I would just leave things be and check back to make sure you have a successfully mated queen.
  6. Re: putting topbars in langroth colony then splitting into an empty top bar hive

What did you decide to do?

    Re: Splitting a Top-bar hive

I have a top-bar that's completely full...I don't see any signs of queen cells being made, but none of the honey is capped (just getting started). What would you do to create more room in this...

Re: Lotís of Drone Cells. Why?

Yes, this has been true for me, too!

This is a good point to consider, too. I once installed a package that had a "dud" queen (infertile/badly mated) and she lay only drones...ALL the comb...
  9. Re: Caught queen w/ mating sign at trap-out entrance

That's awesome! Better go play the lottery today, like someone else suggested. :D
  10. Re: One handed queen catcher -vs- two finger queen catcher.

I use a queen clip and it works great. I use it a fair bit. Mine were super cheap and I've given some away, came in a package of 6 or something.

Re: Bee Police Help I have been robbed

Robbing screens helped me a lot! Easy to use and very effective. I've got one on an empty hive right now that has stores I don't want to have robbed out.

Re: Top Bar Hive Check on Groundhog Day

We are in the midst of a cold snap, so we'll see. A couple weeks ago they were flying around just great but we got 8" of snow yesterday and low temps, so...we'll see how it goes!

I'm sorry to hear that! So frustrating. There really are an endless amount of things to go wrong.

    Re: Treating a top bar

I do crush and strain, but it's usually months after the treatment. I have never noticed a taste.

Re: How are folks doing this year?

Unfortunately, I don't know anyone except my FIL who has one...he would let me borrow it but lives too far away for it to be reasonable. I have not done a recent mite count. That reminds me...I have...

Re: How are folks doing this year?

Things are going ok. I tried to treat with OAV but my vaporizer had a problem...new part and my hubby broke it trying to fix it, so...they are untreated as of right now and I'm not sure what to do....

    Re: Not totally dead TBH

Yeah, it sounds like robbers already, maybe...it can be as busy as a regular hive. Can you try listening at night to see if there's any activity? I think at this point I'd just leave it and recheck...
  20. Re: Help-Bee Problem: Is it illegal to spray and kill nuisance bees in NYS?

    Not a successful one!
  21. Re: Help-Bee Problem: Is it illegal to spray and kill nuisance bees in NYS?

Following along...this is very interesting. There's an old building in town next to my friend's house that has a colony in it. The owners haven't found a solution (it's cement block) and it keeps...

    Re: Hive Concerns

Do you have any honey/nectar stores at all? It looks like you have another hive next to this one in the pic...how is it doing? Have you monitored/treated for varroa?

    Re: Flow Hives (again)

I helped my friend with a harvest the other day from one...and by "helped" I mean stood there and watched as there was literally nothing for me to do. She has four colonies and just one of them in a...
