  1. acceptable temps for in-hive feeding? Best logistics?

In eastern NC it's been fairly cold (but sunny) lately; I refrained from feeding my Girls the 2:1 in their hives -- didn't want to compromise any larvae with cold-exposure.

    OK: today has gone into...

Re: best way to 2:1 feed in-hive?

I've tried using the Boardman feeders in the past; the lousy SHBs can hide between the lid and jar, and it becomes an issue (I think). I'm thinking the unused paint cans would be a better way to go....

Re: best way to 2:1 feed in-hive?

Mil gracias -- just what I needed to see. I'm gonna check with the local paint store to see what I can get.

Re: best way to 2:1 feed in-hive?

I have to guess they're still hungry (and/or needing supplies); whenever I put out a gallon+ of syrup, it's Katie-bar-the-door with the bees. The syrup's gone within a couple of hours. I'm assuming...

best way to 2:1 feed in-hive?

I've been outside-feeding The Girls for weeks now (always a big hit with 'em), but cold weather's beginning here as of today. SO .... in 2:1 feeding them within the 3 hives I have, should I use a...
  6. possible reconfiguration with frame feeder (to avoid it becoming a beetle hotel?)

I'm outside feeding lately (dry autumn so far, no real rains in sight, little-to-no nectar available and so-so pollen) and spoke with an engineer last night about an issue I see with using...
  7. Re: mass of dead bees in feeder's shallow "moat"; any ideas re: why?!

OK -- it's appreciated. I have cedar shavings I could use. Would clean pinestraw be an option?
  8. Re: mass of dead bees in feeder's shallow "moat"; any ideas re: why?!

    Obliged!

BTW, my little manuka seems to be thriving. Nice little bright-red blooms on it. Winter's not far away so that'll be the real test ....

  9. Re: mass of dead bees in feeder's shallow "moat"; any ideas re: why?!

Thx much, guys; I wasn't aware the stickiness issue would be a problem. Makes perfect sense to me, though. I just dumped a gallon of syrup into a dish (no water in the lid underneath, though --this...
  10. mass of dead bees in feeder's shallow "moat"; any ideas re: why?!

I've been outside feeding lately (using dishes of syrup placed in shallow trashcan lids with a little water in them - to keep out ants). I know the cautions about outside feeding but still choose to...

    Re: uugh, wax moths...

Interesting point, R -- maybe the sequence could metabolically confuse the eggs? That tactic has been shown to work under other circumstances and species; no idea re: moth eggs .....
  12. Re: Are moth eggs susceptible to paradichlorobenzene?

OK -- if you use the "search" box and type Bt-k or wax moth treatments (along those lines), the posts should pop up.

Re: the maggots showing after Tx .... I didn't expect that, but then again, the...
  13. Re: Are moth eggs susceptible to paradichlorobenzene?

That's what I was told originally last year, but in the meantime, the consensus seems to be that Bt-k is as good; there're lots of posts in the Forum that indicate that (unless you have some new...

    Re: uugh, wax moths...

OK, fish -- I'm sort of on a crusade here this a.m., so .... I'll continue, for now: per folks with lots more experience than I, freezing doesn't kill wax moth eggs. As far as I can tell, it zaps...
  15. Re: Will bees accept wax moth damages frames and clean them up?

You cited that you froze the frames; was this to kill off the moths? From bitter experiences -- and what all the old-time beeks tell me -- cold doesn't bother moth eggs at all. I've frozen [for a...
  16. Are moth eggs susceptible to paradichlorobenzene?

Here's the story: I removed frames from a "collapsing" hive in summer (bee #s vanishing, etc, and some SHB maggots appearing). Froze them for 2 weeks, then stored them in large plastic bins (not...
  17. Re: OAD dosage and unwise to do a dribble during a dearth?

Thx a million, Ark; I don't know where that 135 came from (could've been a disaster maybe).

I think our dearth is supposed to end pretty soon (once the goldenrod starts to bloom), so .... best to...
  18. Re: OAD dosage and unwise to do a dribble during a dearth?

OK, Coal -- as near as I can tell (from Randy's chart), I would use 45 g OA crystals in 1 L of 1:1 sugar syrup. Does anybody take issue with that?

Re: How close can I set my hives

FWIW .... I read an article in a European mag the other day, comparing hives perched on even stands, close to each other, and all painted white versus hives kept a # of feet apart, of different...
  20. OAD dosage and unwise to do a dribble during a dearth?

Can anybody, off the top of their head, tell me the correct # of grams/unit vol of wood bleach to use for a OA dribble? Seems like it was 135 g for a L -- last time I used the commercial stuff.

  21. best way to apply Bt-k to frames (that could have moth-maggot potential)?

I had lots of good feedback to my earlier post re: eliminating moths/maggots. That said ....

How do I treat the frames? I have manually-operated sprayers, so .... just spray the solution on each...

Re: Paramoth: kills or only deters moths?

I do freeze - but for 2-4 weeks! As some old-timers have told me, over and over, cold doesn't seem to bother moth eggs at all. May kill the adults, but .... it's a chicken-egg thing, I guess.

Re: Paramoth: kills or only deters moths?

Gross! The "eggs" make the little monsters even more unappealing to me.

I have some Bt-k. Might be time to use it!

    Thx, all, for the data!

Paramoth: kills or only deters moths?

I'm having issues with moths on my old frames (I keep in the house) -- I washed/scraped them (all have plastic foundation) in fall, and have kept them in the air inside (not in the usual plastic...
  25. hived swarm robbed out; should I have not fed them?

I hived a tiny swarm several weeks ago (using 2 nucs put together). Once I moved them to the formal hive stand, I placed a Boardman feeder into the top nuc. Figured the bees needed all the help they...
