    Re: Chickens and Bees?

Bees and chickens generally ignore each other. In an abundance of caution, don't confine the chickens close to a hive. For example, you would not want to put a hive in a run and lock up the...

Re: Unexplained Shotgun Brood -- Suggestions?

I don't have any beetle problems. The soil is very heavy gumbo clay, and I think they can't pupate.

Re: Unexplained Shotgun Brood -- Suggestions?

I don't know how old the queen is. Most of my queens are from swarms and their descendants who have superseded.

Re: Unexplained Shotgun Brood -- Suggestions?

The open brood looks fine. If it were spotty, I'd think the queen wasn inbred or failing. That's what's weird. Only the capped brood looks bad.

I expected that recipe to end with "then throw away the possum and eat the board," but it didn't. There wasn't even a mention of the board.

Re: Unexplained Shotgun Brood -- Suggestions?

I used to use screened bottoms, but I phased them out. I don't have an overwintered nuc, but I should catch a swarm before long. Maybe I'll boost this one with a swarm.

    Unexplained Shotgun Brood -- Suggestions?

I've got one hive that has me scratching my head. The sealed brood is very shotgunny. Where the queen has laid more recently, the brood pattern looks good. I did not see any sickly open brood. I...

    Re: Polar Plunge

My Dad once accidentally dumped me out of the back of a boat in late November during really cold weather. I wanted to say things that I shouldn't have said, but I was too cold and in shock to talk...

  14. Re: For those of us who do inspections when it is HOT!

I wear an Ultrabreeze over shorts. I take a large towel rolled up with ice in the middle of the roll. I drape the towel over my neck under the suit. The ice melts as I work and it keeps me cool.

    Comb Storage Options

After Varroa, the biggest difficulty I have in beekeeping is storing my comb. I checkerboard my hives and set them up with single deeps and all mediums or shallows above that. The result is that...
  16. When Hives Swarm More Than Once, How Do They Do It?

I've always been under the impression that when a hive swarms multiple times, the queens all come from the original/parent queen. In other words, I thought the old queen leaves multiple queen cells,...
  17. Re: Any Boy Souters or former Boy Scouts out there?

I was not in scouting, but I'm Cubmaster at my younger son's Pack, and my older boy is in a Troop.

Re: What birds or insects have you seen eating bees?

A pair of Eastern Kingbirds nest in my little pole barn every year. Until it warms up and more insects are around, they eat my bees. I've also seen Scissor-tailed Flycatchers eating my bees. They...

The information they've gathered already provides some helpful guidance about some things.

    Re: Is this a queen?

That's an oddball-looking bee. In most respects it looks like a not so good queen, but it has eyes like a drone. Maybe its the picture that makes the eyes look bigger than they are. I'd like to...
