  1. Re: He didn't think BT was necessary for wax moths

    What Snapper said +1.
Be aware that because pesticides are regulated - the label is the law.
The states regulate permissible uses, as example, remember that OA usage had to be permitted state by...

    Re: Preserving Genetics

I would change the above recommendation for the following reason.
It takes lots of nurse bees to feed a developing larvae to produce a guality queen.
A few frames of bees in a split has not got...
  3. Re: process for selling honey locally (sall-scale) ....?

Go online to your state government site and search for the sales requirements. It is very state dependant. You need to follow your state labeling and processing requirements not federal labeling.

    Re: Towel Treatment

I am in the same neighborhood (VA) - 37 hives going into last winter, 37 healthy hives in spring.
    Treatment OAV "standard" 3x7days

    Re: will queenless swarm

If the hive is strong and has started preparing to swarm before the old queen was removed they may still swarm as virgins emerge if there are a lot of them.

Re: Genetics, Hive Alive, or ?....advice

I am with Astro and JW on managing the hives. You have to make time to inspect and be ahead of the bees.
I also agree with Astro that some bees are genetically more prone to swarming. The focus on...

    Re: Small Hive Beetle Thoughts

    Sick dog
Good idea to understand the life cycle of the pests. If you are seeing SHB larvae on your inserts, they are in your hives. They tunnel through the brood and pollen eating them as a protein...

    Re: Production Hives

    Larry
In my case it is not production vs non productive. I agree that some folks nurse along a queen or hive when requeening would solve issues.
In my case it is a strong "production" hive for...

    Re: Drone Congregation Area Saturation

Depends a lot on where you are located in relation to other beekeepers and "feral" hives.
You can stack the deck a little by surrounding your mating yard with hives containing your desired drones....

    Re: Foundation Question

Grooved top and bottom frames should take the wired foundation without hooks if using wax. It will snap in just like the plastic. If it has hooks you will have to cut them off.

    Re: frame exchange with nucs.

No exchange. I am part foundation and part foundation less. Cost of frames is already in the price of the nuc.
  15. Sticky: Re: A shift in message? The case for IPM instead of bond as the path to TF for new ba

    MSL
I would respectfully suggest that your math assumption of 3.5/100 is incorrect.
    21 count /300 =7% would be correct.
Most research in hive mite total population shows that 75-80% are in the...

    Re: Comb

General recommendation is five years. Makes it easy by rotating out 2 oldest combs a year from a 10 frame box. The idea is to reduce the reservoir of disease spores and bacteria as well as pesticide...

    Re: Queen cell requeening

The thorax of the Queen is what limits her going through the excluder not her abdomen. Virgin or mated that is the limiting factor.

Re: Frost coming with trees budded

Yes, often you will lose a lot of the black locust and tulip poplar. The blooms are forming in the buds and are damaged well before opening.

    Re: Oxalic acid vaporizer

Pay a little more and get the varrox vaporizer. It will last a lifetime, connections are waterproof. Oxalic acid sublimates, goes directly from a solid to a gas, think like dry ice.
