I found her dead outside of one of my nucs today. I know this happened today because I sweep the ground every evening. Today was most likely a mating trip.

These aren’t! Unfortunately all of my grafts failed so I gave every nuc a frame of eggs and let them raise their own. 😩 How are your nucs doing?

Do Queens get longer/grow after mating?

Just checked on my nucs and found 4/8 virgin queens (presumably, there were no eggs laid so far and this is the mating period). None of them are particularly long but I've read that they grow after...

Thats great! Yeah I think I was squishing them too unfortunately. Just getting used to the tool has taken a bit of practice. I'm glad to hear you're off to a great start. My regrafting is going as...

Re: When to stop making nucs?

Thanks JWPalmer. I'm in western NC so we probably have very similar conditions! I'm thinking that if I made the last of my queens the first week of July and they were laying early August I would have...

Re: When to stop making nucs?

This is very helpful thank you, especially the note about the importance of enthusiasm. I was definitely hoping to give the last round of mated queens to make up my own nucs for overwintering but am...

Re: Grafted for the first time today. [PIC]

I grafted 6 cells my first try. The weather dipped to around a high of 45 for the past two days so I haven't popped the nuc open to check the status of the grafts but I will be doing that tomorrow....

    When to stop making nucs?

I'm making nucs and raising queens for the first time this year and while I don't expect to be making nucs through late July I am wondering when is a good time to halt queen rearing and nuc building...

WOW. I had no idea it could shed that much water. How did it you calculate this? I like the quilt box idea but I was reading into overwintering nucs on top of larger colonies when I started thinking...

  17. Humidity in Winter Hives. Has anyone tried...

Has anyone considered or implemented using silica packets (sans Cobalt Chloride) for moisture absorption in a hive while overwintering? I feel like it could work.

    Feeding before splitting?

I'm new to raising queens (aside from walkaway splits) so please forgive me if this is a typical question but I just can't find anything specific with any of my search terms.

    Background: I have...

    PMS vs Foulbroods ?

I have some questionable frames from a couple hives in my yard that have bad mite infestations (showing DWV and spotty patterns). Just put MAQS on yesterday. I'm still learning my way through...

Re: Pulling honey in a dearth?

This might actually work out! I wonder if I could work at dusk with a similar affect. I'm a slow beekeeper since the boxes are heavy and for me, if I'm taking the supers off to add the escape I might...

Re: Pulling honey in a dearth?

I think the act of taking off the supers to add a bee escape will set off robbing in my yard. Today, by the time I had removed one super they were already crazy and I still had one to go. If I did...

    Pulling honey in a dearth?

It's recommended to treat for mites in mid-August which works out because that's when the honey is usually capped but when I tried to pull the honey today I set off a massive robbing frenzy because...

Re: Best Source for Nuc Advice and Strategy?

When you sell bees and tell them BYOB do you give them a caged mated queen, your overwintered queen or do you give them a frame of eggs to raise a queen? This might sound like a stupid question but I...
