    Re: Best Bee Vac?

50 weeks a year X 5 working days = 250 days. 1000 cutouts / 250 days is 4 a day. I can do that and not even break a sweat. With 90% success rate I would have time to care for the 900 new colonies a...
  2. Re: Considering moving from 8 frame to 10 frame

After using 10 and 12 frame hives for 40 years I made a bunch of 8 frame. The 12 frames with Jumbo depth brood frames are a clear winner once again this year in reduced swarming leading to big crops....

Re: Bees not expanding to new frames

Honey normally does not drip down from combs except when you break some. How old is the colony? Are you feeding? Is there a flow on? Did you add extra wax to plastic foundations if you are using that?

    Re: Bearding On Swarm Trap

Using both LGO and SCL together will cause the same problem. I had three hanging out the year I tried that.

Re: Plastic frames in a trap?

Yes, if they have black comb on them. I have plastic frame combs I have adopted and have caught several swarms on them. That is the only reason I have a few hives with plastic frames. The bees...

Re: Trapping 2020 - success rate?

I did not track how many I put out. Plus we clean up and bait dead hives. I love the the thrill of coming to an apiary and finding a full trap I forgot I set out. I would think the catch success rate...

Re: Trapping 2020 - success rate?

I have caught over 22, this does not includes a few already confirmed fails. And at least one of the 22 had no brood at inspection. I set out a fraction of what I set out in the past because three...

    Re: HONEY SUPERS

We usually shake them or bang on the ground to reduce the count.
  12. Re: Watched a swarm move INTO a queenless nuc!

I have twice seen a swarm move into a weak hive managed by a poor queen.
  13. Re: Cooling of interior by frequent inspection - every 5 days?

I would think the upset due to lack of smoke more of a problem than temperature loss.

    Re: cut out honey

Looking at the picture of that old black comb....when it is so easy to produce honey from clean extracting combs I would not use any honey out of that for human consumption. I would solar melt all of...

Bees in Lake County, CA do not die of freezing in a hive filled with honey. They do not have to be insulated....

Charlie sold off all his bee equipment before moving and I was able to swindle him out of stuff cheap. One bait swarm I caught even cleaned up some of his SHB slimed combs. I caught two on his old...

I did not say that swarms need logs. I said that placing logs on top of bait hives seems to add to their attractiveness. Nothing is a sure thing in beekeeping. I last week caught a swarm in a five...

  23. Re: Yesterday scouts, today swarm.. Do I need to feed first night?

Swarms have survived for millions of years without anyone feeding them. Feeding will help draw comb and build up faster.

Re: What do you feed your bees?

I drive to Mann Lake and fill five gallon buckets with Prosweet. Less time driving than mixing syrup. And it does not ferment.

Re: Swarm Traps from Idle gear?

I caught a swarm on 2/14 into this pile of empty 8 frame honey supers. No comb, no frames, no lure. I then just filled two boxes with combs and shook them onto them. I catch one or two every years...
