    Re: Band heater vaporizer.

It works from top down, key is to have some space for the vapors to disapate as they cool and condense back to the small crystals that we see as the "cloud". I have done some nucs from the top with...

    Re: Band heater vaporizer.

OAV from under the screen is not a good idea. The metal screen acts as a heat sink and the OA recrystalizes on it instead of going up into the hive. It is one of the reasons that some folks have...

  5. Re: What does Packed for or by on label mean?

That language just covers who put the product in the jar.
Does not tell the origin of the product, could be local, could be imported.
Covers the part of the labeling requirement for contact info,...

    Re: Beekeeping Technique Question

30-60 % loss may be on par with what you hear but making up that setback every year is tough to overcome.
I would suggest that you do a thorough analysis of your dead outs to get to root cause for...

Re: Question on Queen and drone genetics

The individual drone sperm is not compartmentalized in the spermatheca. So it is more likely to be external conditions affecting their variable temperament during the seasons.

    Look up fabis test.

There are some folks in Texas that sell Queens that have some African genetic material in their background and may also have open mated with...

    Re: Varroa test

JConnolly you may want to review the varroa life cycle.
You are correct that formic acid forms a true vapor which can penetrate the porous brood capping to kill mites in the capped brood.
    The "old...

    Re: Varrox: A cautionary tale

    Have to agree with crofter.
Instructions for varrox say two and a half minutes - not three.
Burr comb on the bottom of frames in the middle of the bottom box should be removed periodically just...

    Re: Oxylic acid schedule

Looks like a wand design issue. Too much mass for the heat source and not good distribution.
I like the Varrox. More expensive but really works well.
  14. Re: OA vaporization is probably safe with honey supers - here's my calculations

    Elmer
You are correct that you can lower moisture in honey that is not fully capped by "using a box fan to blow air through the supers".
You should not have to lower moisture on fully capped honey.

Probably also pollen that was stored in the cells as well. Crushed up and now mixed in. It does not float up as much wax and air bubbles.

Re: How quickly do robbers kill the queen?

There is no time table. She is collateral damage, not a target, so no way to give you a meaningful answer.
  18. Re: OA vaporization is probably safe with honey supers - here's my calculations

A couple of replies reference formic acid entering the cappings.
This is not correct for honey.
Formic vapors go through the brood cappings which are porous.
Formic is not soluable in beeswax so...

Re: How long to wait for wash after OAV?

I agree with Johno on timing although for a different reason.
Also agree with Larry - SNL on timing of continued kill.

Re: When to start feeding for winter?

Since all beekeeping is local and I don't know where Orland Park is it is hard to give a firm answer.
In Virginia I am feeding some to keep them growing.
We are in a dearth in my area. Not trying...

Re: Oxalic acid & honey super

What you see as grey "vapors" is the cloud of recrystalized OA.
It sublimates, going directly from a solid to a vapor (like dry ice)
As soon as it's temp falls below the vaporization point it...
  22. Re: best way to apply Bt-k to frames (that could have moth-maggot potential)?

Your Google reference is an excellent compilation of info about wax moth control but the info about Btk at the end is incorrect. It is labeled with the same warnings as Bta.
    Both contain the...

    An additional comment.
I agree with the thoughts above, you can keep virgins at a lower temp. But the extra incubator may not be cost effective if you are only doing it occasionally.
    Hence my...

    Re: A second incubator ?

Virgins emerge in the hive at the same temp, not necessary to run a lower temp.
