Re: Hive swarmed what to do with super

That's a good point. I'll leave it on and hopefully they'll get it finished.

Hive swarmed what to do with super

I had a hive swarm and the medium super was about 60% full. Now that there aren't many bees left should I take that super and put it on one of my booming hives to have them finish it?

    Re: How many honey extractions?

I'm hoping to be able to extract once around the beginning of July but it isn't looking good. These cold fronts and all the rain have kept the bees from bringing in hardly any nectar.

Queen trying to make a run for it.

Saw the tornado get started today and waited to see where they would go and they ended up back at the hive. This is a package that was installed a little over a month ago. They've drawn out 7...

    Need help with caught swarm

I've got 2 bee yards and had a hive swarm today from one which I caught. I don't want to expand my apiary so I feel like I've got 2 options on what to do with this swarm.
    1. I caught a super...

    Re: Tennessee

Well I finally caught a swarm that wasn't from my own hives. Set up one of the Mann Lake flower pot looking swarm traps at a friends house and baited it with old comb and swarm commander. Last...

    Re: Tennessee

Worst beekeeper ever. I've had 3 swarms from my hives so far this year. Luckily I've caught two of them. Latest was today. I found them on a pear tree and when I shook them into the box they had...

    Re: Tennessee

Well I had another one escape. Last week I opened the outside of the brood nest and didn't see any queen cups. Well the queen left yesterday with half the hive and there are plenty of queen cups...

    Re: Tennessee

Well my strongest hive swarmed today. Luckily I saw it and was able to catch the swarm. I thought for sure splitting that hive 3 weeks ago would have kept them from swarming. Oh well I'm learning...

    Re: Flow Hives

I tried Flow Hive my first year beekeeping. I didn't have any success in them using it. I chalked it up to it being a first year hive and adding the Flow after the spring nectar flow. Last year I...

    Lesson learned the hard way

3 weeks ago my hives were running low on stores. I had a feeder shim on with mountain camp. One of my hives died earlier in the year so I had a fair amount of honey left over. I didn't want to be...

Will a swarm trap cause swarming?

I would like to try my hand at catching a swarm but the only decent place I could put a trap would be about 60 yards from my hives. Would having a swarm trap that close be tempting enough to lure my...

    Re: Bees starving

Thanks alot guys. I'm going to put a box of honey on each hive tomorrow. I've got a small spacer on top now for the mountain camp. Any harm leaving that and the mountain camp on in between the two...

    Bees starving

I've had a couple of deadouts with tons of honey left over. I've got 3 hives that are very short on stores. I was going to try and get into them this weekend and put a couple of honey frames in...

    Re: Mountain camp vs. honey

That makes sense about the energy required to consume honey vs. sugar. I'm a new beek so I'm learning as much as I can from you guys. I added the sugar at the beginning of winter when I saw a lot...

    Mountain camp vs. honey

I checked all of my hives yesterday and all the honey is still capped and the bees are eating the sugar bricks. Why are they preferring the sugar over the honey?

Re: What to do with deadout honey?

Thanks for the responses. That makes sense that sugar water would get the queen going more than capped honey. My best guess on why they died was varroa. I did OAV in the fall. 5 treatments 4 days...

What to do with deadout honey?

I've got a dead out with a bunch of honey left. If I buy a package of bees this spring could I just drop a couple frames of this honey in there instead of feeding sugar water?

Not sure on the big ants but I've coated the hive stand legs in Vaseline and the ants won't cross it.

I'll try to get some up close pics of the brood tomorrow. When I inspect the brood and cappings look very similar to the other hives but the brood pattern is horrible. Very shotgun like. Shouldn't...

I'm not completely sure what the problem is. I bought 3 packages and installed them last day of March. I fed them all the same and have treated for Varroa as well. This hive is the only one out of...
