Re: Is Mann Lake operational right now?

I don't think they'll give you much grief if you return them.

Re: My hive wants to be queenless

Yeah, went in there today and found several queen cells in one of the frame of brood/eggs I took from the other hive. A $40 queen and 4 hours of driving down the crapper. Should I periodically add...

My hive wants to be queenless

I bought 2 nucs on April 8th. On April 29th I treated both with Formic Pro. I originally transferred the nucs into 10 frame deeps, then added another deep not too long later out of fear of swarming....

Re: Feeding and relocation of it to supers

Thanks for the reply. This is opposite of some people's opinion on here that bees don't move honey (nectar, syrup, whatever). I'm assuming there have been experiments with this.

Re: Feeding and relocation of it to supers

This is what I don't get. Putting supers on while feeding is a definite no-no. Putting supers on after feeding is okay because the general theory is they won't move syrup. But then others say bees...

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

Went to put on the 2nd dose of formic pro on the two hives, plus supers if I felt they could use them. SURPRISE! One hive has no brood or eggs or any indication of a queen. The other hive has eggs...

Re: "murder hornet" vs. Flow hive

Well many years ago I heard how African killer bees are going to take over the US, so......
  8. Re: Northeastern/Mid-Western Weather roller-coaster 2020.

How did you feed? Also, do escapes allow queens through (I'm assuming yes).
  9. Re: Northeastern/Mid-Western Weather roller-coaster 2020.

"It keeps the bees out of the supers while feeding them so they can't enter the supers with sugar water and store it there. They must store/use it in the brood boxes. Also, the bees that were in the...
  10. Re: Northeastern/Mid-Western Weather roller-coaster 2020.

I know what a bee escape is, but I never heard of feeding with an escape on with supers. How is he ensuring the bees aren't storing syrup in the supers?

    edit: I guess I'm stuck on top-feeding,...
  11. Re: Northeastern/Mid-Western Weather roller-coaster 2020.

    Right. I'm still confused.
  12. Re: Northeastern/Mid-Western Weather roller-coaster 2020.

I had 4 out of 4 deadouts this past winter. Bought 2 new nucs and installed them in 10 frame deeps about a month ago. Added a second deep a couple of weeks after that. Just put formic pro on them....
  13. Re: Northeastern/Mid-Western Weather roller-coaster 2020.

So you're feeding with supers on?

Re: Mites Won't Stop! Using OAV.

There do seem to be huge variables: true amount of OA (flat vs. very rounded spoon); temp of vaporizer; 8 frame vs 10 frame vs 1 deep vs 2 deep; genetics; amount of bees in colony; are hives closed...

Re: Mites Won't Stop! Using OAV.

I'm sure you get a bulk discount, but how much per hive do you spend on treatments per year?

Re: Formic Pro or no? What's the best treatment?

Thank you all for your replies. Seems even with the upfront costs of a vaporizer, OA is the cheapest way to go in the long run. I don't like the idea of putting temperature-sensitive chemicals in the...

Re: Formic Pro or no? What's the best treatment?

Makes sense with OAV. With chemicals that require several week treatments I really see no value of testing for mites other than knowing whether they're really working or not. If they're not working...

Re: Formic Pro or no? What's the best treatment?

What do you recommend when there's capped brood?
Also, I always see that everyone recommends doing mite counts. I'm still not sure what the point is if I'm treating anyway. Like last year I treated...

Re: Formic Pro or no? What's the best treatment?

I suppose after buying other treatments it does just make sense to invest in an OA wand. You guys have talked me into it!

Formic Pro or no? What's the best treatment?

Deciding on treatments this year. I've read of formic killing queens. I don't really want to invest in a OA vaporizer for two measly hives, but maybe I should just bite the bullet?

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

I just don't learn. Went to "quickly" put on pail feeders on the two new hives without protection. A sting to the neck and hand later I abandoned the bucket with several bees buzzing my head on my...

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

Installed 2 five frame nucs into 2, 10 frame deeps. Drove 2 hours to Betterbee and 2 hours back. Nucs looked strong. Unfortunately didn't see either queen, though saw eggs and such in both nucs. I'm...

Re: How to inspect with less protective gear

Thanks JW. I'll have to look into the Clear-Vu. I almost think I have an Ultra Breeze full suit (or something really really similar). I can't remember now. It's wicked heavy and hot when there's no...
