Re: What to use to get the natural wood look

I am also confused on the bleach or vinegar. Betting it's white vinegar

I bought some tung oil, after seeing how another beek's boxes turned out, but how they did over time I don't know as he sold...

    Re: A Small Victory

late spring they also run out of stores, but that is more a problem in warmer climates where they burn thru stores because they aren't in cluster. Probably mites

    Re: Global Warming

That's the truth. I learned to type on a typewriter, by the time the typewriter was obsolete I was running an IBM system 34. But it didn't change much, when the system went down someone had to fix...
  6. Re: A new Year. What are your goals for the bees in 2020?

I just want to keep mine alive and get them down to 3 hives probably. I get more honey with fewer mouths to feed.

Re: A VERY hot hive - what next?

    That is one beautiful queen.

I define a hot hive as one that comes after me when I enter the apiary (I also keep a pond and some chickens back there).

If I'm stealing honey I am suited up...

    Re: Beeswax "saran wrap" alternative

I've got pine gum resin coming off my big pine tree in a couple of places, I wonder if I can prep it for use.

    Re: RIP little bees...

Without doing a postmortem wash to check for mites on the bees, and maybe sending a few for testing (nosema always loving the moisture), I wouldn't call it as mites.

    I don't treat that much, I do...

    Re: RIP little bees...

Accurate mite counting - I haven't done in years. I use screened bottom boards with sticky boards, If I see mites on the sticky, I think one good OAV when little or no brood is warranted.

    My hives...

    Re: RIP little bees...

I am sorry you lost your hives. I can only offer my experience and I am in a MUCH warmer, dryer climate, we have drought again. Winter drought which will affect my spring forage situation.

    I am in...

    Re: Learned Lesson for 2019

I donated my frame feeders to Metro's raffle years ago, let someone else modify. I had a netting system to let them get in and out, but I got deep feeders and getting INTO the bottom box to fill them...

Re: Jumbo depth frames in an 8 frame box?

There are some neat ideas here. But if I did it, I'd just wire, coat with beeswax, and let the bees draw the comb. (my days of foundationless deeps without wires or 40lb fishing line have ended)

    Re: RIP little bees...

Have you opened the hives to do a post mortem exam, sent any bees off for testing or done a mite wash with alcohol on some bodies?

    Re: Top Feeder Setup

I use a 3 inch hole saw, feeder lids intended for Boardman feeders. I make migratory covers of plywood with 1x2 ends, drill a 3 inch hole, staple #8 hardware cloth on the inside, use an inner cover,...

    Re: Bumpy top of candle

Thank you so much for the tip JW.
I have a double boiler, used it for paraffin candles years ago, and for soap recently, and we have a little pour slot cut in it already, I have both a meat and...
  18. Re: Warm spell for the next week, liquid sugar water or candy board?

In North Texas our flow is so early that brood building now is a normal thing. I put pollen sub out in a feeder and they didn't touch it for about a week, when demand goes up, pollen sub gets...
  19. Re: Warm spell for the next week, liquid sugar water or candy board?

I'm in Texas. I made fondant last winter and didn't get enough winter to use it all, and I made only half a batch. Syrup, on top of the hive but not where it will drip, in a box for insulation, works...

neat ideas. I wonder how much wax I've got. I bought a crockpot for this.
  21. Re: Warm spell for the next week, liquid sugar water or candy board?

I am deciding the same and I think I'm going with syrup. Going to be 70 on christmas

Well requeening does pretty well at keeping African DNA down to a dull roar, but yes we have Small Hive Beetle to go with AHB. It is a challenging place for beekeeping, but aren't they all in...
  23. Sticky: Re: treating vs. not treating for mites: opinion thread

I'm treating. I see mite drop on the sticky, California queen in 1, mutt in another, 2 nucs with beeweaver queens. I may not treat the nucs, no mites on the sticky, but my big hives are getting oav...
