    Grafting from a friends hive

So I'm wanting to graft from someones hive next year. She lives about 20 miles away. I was trying to think of the best way to do it. My idea is to use one of my 2 frame nucs (bees closed in there...

    The crudest incubator

I challenge anyone to show me a home made queen cell incubator that is uglier and cruder than mine. I made it from 3/4" foam board. After a week or so,I realized it fluctuated a bit with the room...

    Re: No queen, no cells

Cant say exactly to the day that I did the last inspection. There were no eggs just older larvae. I'm thinking Eikel is probably correct. I probably just missed seeing a cell or two.

    No queen, no cells

So I'm trying to think of a scenario where there is no queen in a hive and no queen cells either. If the queen is failing, why wouldnt they make cells? My inspections werent far enough apart for them...

    Re: Bees flight height

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll plant some trees down on that end. On that end of the property there is a little hillside going down to the highway so it wouldnt take much to get them over...

    Bees flight height

I've got 11 hives in an open area (1 acre lot) across the street from my house. I've got pine trees on the west and north side of the hives. There is a highway at the far south end which is wide...

What to do with pulled honey frames

I know that beekeepers with lots of hives that are into bee production (not honey production) pull the honey out of the hives for maximum bee production. Most I hear on videos say they feed it back...

Re: Disadvantages to using wire in frames

This has always been my philosophy. Do it less often. It really hasn't been that much of a pain to put the wire on. I use pliers to pull it and the wire is tight. When doing something new, its good...

Re: Disadvantages to using wire in frames

Would I still have to use the furrules with line that thick? I'd think if wire would cut into the wood, fishing line that thick would too.

Re: Disadvantages to using wire in frames

During really hot weather, I've had several frames break right at the honey line even after being real careful.

Disadvantages to using wire in frames

I've started using wire in my frames instead of fishing line. I've used fishing line in the past and so many times I find that the bees chew it in half. I've even seen a couple of times where the...

Re: Wintering advice needed from Tennessee

I live in Western Ky and lived in Nashville for 8 years. Nashville does tend to be a little warmer in the winter then here but here in Ky we get below zero for sometimes 2 weeks at a time. I'd say we...

Re: Worried about winter. Needing some advice.

I'm in Ky. We get below zero temps on average of 2 weeks a year. Winters can be pretty mild. I've over wintered bees with screen bottom boards wide open and they survived ( no longer use them)....

    Re: Recent Changes...opinions?

Personally I don't think hives come with enough ventilation. I drill extra holes in the boxes and cover with hardware cloth. The bees decide how much they need. They often propolize some of them...

Re: I think I should stop feeding syrup

It's good to feed a lot of syrup if you want to fool the bees into thinking there is a nectar flow so the queen will continue to lay heavily and the bee's will continue to draw out comb. If you did...

    Re: Ventilation

I live in Ky and its been over 100 for weeks. In my opinion hives don't come with enough ventilation. If I use an inner cover I drill four 7/8" holes in it then drill 3 holes in the top box ( on the...
  22. Re: Queen strolling in the grass. What did I see? (video to watch)

Possibly just got back from a mating flight? I noticed a ball of bees in the grass a couple days ago. I dug to the middle of the ball and found a virgin queen fighting for her life.

Re: ? Add another box or harvest honey

    Re: Bees tore down cells

This was a walk away split. No initial queen cells. I'm aware of the empty queen cups with no larvae. There was no time for a new queen to emerge. I was maybe confused on the amount of capped cells...

    Bees tore down cells

I did a walk away split. A few days ago I checked and they had 10 queen cells,I think half were capped. I checked today and there were only 3 capped and they had a couple new ones not capped. Why...
