    Re: Bee's Gone

a good friend of mine move a large number of hives out to a pumpkin farm a few years ago.

the farmer sprayed with insecticide while the pumpkin plants were in bloom.

quite a few of my friend's...

  4. Re: How to make DIY Apivar for a 1/100th the price?

correct, it's illegal, just like using oxytet and oav with honey supers on.

illegal 'food for thought' is something that is better not condoned here on this public forum.

    thread closed.
  5. Re: How to make DIY Apivar for a 1/100th the price?

  6. Sticky: Re: Beekeeping using Square Dadant hives, treatment free since 2005

these are two other beekeepers that started a few years ago with nucs from my yards. they have since made splits with those and caught additional swarms from the area.

    the efb outbreak left me...

nice report dar. your numbers look better than the samples dr. williams took here in jackson county yesterday from navy bee's and flatrockboy's yards.

over here the mite infestation ranged from...

    to be determined frank.

i've actually got a very strong caught swarm in a double deep right now with 17 of the 20 frames having come out of efb infected hives and then disinfected with bleach.

Re: Preparing a small hive for winter

i agree with frank about the poor prognosis for this colony making it through winter.

given the highly contagious nature of efb the greater concern is allowing the bacteria to be spread from this...

understood ot. the nice thing about the smaller ones assuming they make it is that they are less likely to swarm and can make a better crop than a strong one that ends up swarming.

  20. Re: Is it feasible to control swarming without performing a spring split?

i've no experience with a snelgrove board but i can certainly see the merits in using one for swarm prevention, especially if making new queens and/or increase hive count is part of the plan.

Re: Drone central - Queenright or combine?

the colony is most likely queenless, but there might be a failed queen lurking around in there.
