    Re: Drones being attacked/killed

The bees are no longer bringing in a surplus and are preparing for winter. The first act is killing off the no longer needed drone population. Happens every year and tells you it is time to treat...

    Re: 2 nucs feeder

What you describe is my common procedure. I winter side by side five frame nucs double deep with an excluder and mountain camp supplemental feed on top. It causes no problems at all for the bees.

Re: Wet frames - how long to leave on hives?

I never put wet frames on hives and don't see any advantage in doing it. But, if you have the fetish, I would imagine how long they would take to have honey expunged would depend on temperature and...

Re: Does AFB deadout comb always have scales?

It would be really hard to ascertain NO SCALE AT ALL. Using old dead out comb is indeed a calculated risk. If you had no history of AFB you probably don't have contaminated comb. The test kits are...

    Re: Cold summer

I am going out today with a load of supers. Here is to hope! But here in the high desert, we are always ten days away from a drought and it hasn't rained so far this month. But it is warming up to...

Re: one-two punch using Apivar and OA dribble?

Apivar is no longer effective in many areas in controlling varroa. OA is still effective if three treatments five or so days apart are properly administered. The Apivar may knock down mite count,...

Re: Supers on first year hive?

Stop feeding and put on supers. If your supers are not drawn comb, consider pulling a frame of eggs and larvae and moving it over the queen excluder after shaking off bees to insure you don't move...

Global warming inexorably continues! It is in the fifties and surprise surprise, the bees are not flying two days before Independence day.

    Re: Found 2 queen cells

I would move the empty frames into the center ONE at a time. I would personally feed until they are drawn. I have no idea when your hot season and dearth begin, but if it has started, it is all...

    Re: Cold summer

I thought it was turrble hot east of the Mississippi? It is hard losing spring and early summer as the days are already shortening up fast in the North. Hopefully things will work out, if not there...

    Cold summer

Beginning of July tomorrow and my bees have produced very little honey. Most hives are just on the edge for stores. We have had rain so the turnaround can hopefully be fast. The flowers are...

    Re: Clumping under SBB

One piece is The well researched book, honeybee democracy. Bees do not choose cavities with gaping holes in the bottom. Another might be that those of us who live where air conditioning is a real...

    Re: Clumping under SBB

Burn the ssb and be done with it. They are just not worth the trouble and are in fact something for the bees to overcome and survive. Bees choose cavities with ONE smallish entrance that they can...

    More global warming

The longest day of the year and I was and am pulling empty supers and putting feed on! My bees have virtually no reserves at a time when the flow should be starting strong. The clover is starting...

    Re: Honey flow

Little white and yellow butterflies mobbing an alfalfa field are a prime indicator. You have to open lids, the smell of a strong flow is wonderful, white wax on top bars is a sign of much nectar...
  20. Re: Does the queen run from sunlight, wind etc when you open top of hive?

Some worse than other. Some just go about their business laying eggs.

    Re: Nosema and Comb

the only way to tell if they "struggled" with Nosema is to send a sample off for a laboratory examination. Read about how long Nosema spores can survive under varying climatic conditions. I doubt...

    Re: Nosema and Comb

Not necessary at all. I scrape off the woodware and reuse with no ill effect I have noted. Some fumigate with acetic acid which is vinegar. Search that if you feel the need to research. Put them...

10 frame deeps are definitely the cheapest way to go for supers. When I was younger and strong and expanding, all my equipment was ten frame cause it was cheaper and faster to work thru and this...
