    Re: Split Timing

I pulled a walkaway split off of what has got to be my strongest hive last weekend, shook off the frames and added a queen excluder and another super. Checked on them yesterday and added a third...

    Re: Requeen every July?

Little Joe, the bees know better than we do when it is time to requeen. A hobbyist should go with the flow. Most queens are productive well into their third year, some even longer.

Re: removing nuisance bees from water source

Got to thinking about Linda's other posts and realized that it probably was. Modified the post before I saw yours that confirmed it. Oh well. Would have worked in the old days...

Re: removing nuisance bees from water source

Ala french drain. Get a one gallon flower pot. Dig hole. Put flower pot in hole below grade. Fill flower pot with gravel. Add pvc pipe extention and put into gravel. Cover flower pot with dirt and...

    Bee of the Day

This came across my desk and I thought I would share it. Some of the photos are quite good.

    Re: 2 easy questions

Welcome to Beesource fracmeister. I do not believe there are any standards with TBH bars as there are with Langstroth frames. Best would be to contact the kit manufacturer for replacements. Or, do...

    Re: Beginner from Gerald, Missouri.

Ha, gww is a he. I am sure he was not offended. I find myself suprised sometimes, thinking I am conversing with a guy, only to find out months later that the beekeeper was female. Of course, it truly...

    Re: Richinbama 2018-2020 beekeeping quest

In VA, all forms of agriculture/farming appear to be exempt. PA is in lockdown yet I just got an order shipped from Mann-Lake's Wilkes-Barre location.

    Re: Accidental Swarm Catch

I will play devil's advocate and say that having comb attached to the the top is not an acceptable situation. It must be removed. Now, what to do with the comb? Chances are good the swarm queen has...

Re: Entrance feeder vs. top feeder

Ed, my bees are producing real honey already here just south of you in Richmond. I only have feeders on my splits and weak hives.

To your question though, add a tsp. or two of annis extract to a...

    Re: Split Timing

Alan, if you have drones, split away. Give them lots of bees but do not overdo it on the brood frames. Chilled brood does not make for more bees. Just one or two frames with eggs and brood and...
  12. Re: Will the Wuhan coronavirus negatively affect the beekeeping industry?

I would like to call it Covid-19, it's official name, or simply the corona virus.

I think people that live near large package and nuc producers may see prices go down in their area as the travel...

    Re: Wax moth 'nests'.

Jon, LJ is not talking about the silk tubes the wax moths create as they tunnel through the comb. In a severely infested hive, the frames are joined by a mass of webbing that is quite tough, this is...
  14. Re: Brand New Soon to Be Beekeeper With Hive Question

Not too bad if you allow ample drying time (weeks). The boxes are going to stick together from propolis anyway.

Re: Brushy Mountain is no longer???

Mann Lake's PA store is two states away. I placed an order for a 50# bag of Ultrabee and 5 queen excluders on Monday. Got my delivery on Thursday (yesterday). Brushy Mountain would take forever to...

Re: Brushy Mountain is no longer???

I use Brushy Mountain, Mann-Lake, Kelly, and home made 10 frame deep boxes. They are all compatable, as are the inner covers, bottom boards and telescoping tops. My home made stuff is a direct copy...

We can get away with that here. Not something you want to be saying to the police!

    Your advice is still good.

    Re: Just curious,

Definantly melt down the comb for the wax and use the slumgum as fire starter for the bbq. I would not attempt to compost wax.

  22. Re: Help! I think I have a honey bee hive in my shed wall.

Great Stuff spray foam is good for sealing up those holes. Happy to hear all went well. With the hive far in, it is unlikely the spray did much damage.

I have been guilty of having foot in the mouth disease on numerous occasions. In this case, I was merely suggesting that someone else may be using the term in a different manner.
