    Re: Single brood box?

It's all in the math and the management
An average Q lays between 1500-2000 eggs per day. 2000 x21days is 42000 brood cells before the first egg emerges as an adult.
    There are aprox 4500 cells...
  6. Re: Nuc calculator for projected hive count

Keep an eye on your hives.Already hearing reports of sealed drone brood in central CT and I'm expecting an early swarm season.
  7. Re: Sugar Syrup Dispensing - Hose Type and Length

I would think that one would need some sort of a pressure relief valve so the when the nozzle was off ,the syrup would recirculate back to the tank.
Most trash pumps I have worked with have a flow...

    Re: Ron Hoskins place vandalized

A shame to see such evil in this world.
  9. Re: Luring swarm in progress into baithive?

I walked into one of my yards last year right as a hive was swarming. It settled low in a tree about 15 ft away.I just happened to have my swarm collecting box in the van so I took a frame of open...
  10. Re: Transparent PVC boards instead of Wood for Bee Hive

Since all the action in a colony happens between the frames I don't know what you expect to see.
  11. Re: Stapler for hardware cloth- not frames or boxes, etc

You could try ceiling tile staples in your T50 stapler.I have not used them in Advantech but find they penetrate hard pine and trim coil better than the standard staples. They don't collapse.
    The...
  12. Re: No sign of queen at first spring inspection

Would not hurt to call some local pkg dealers.
Many of them also bring up Qs when they pick up pkgs.
You could requeen later with a Rus Q
Would not hurt to call one of these guys either.They...
  13. Re: EFB Pro-active treatments - Now or wait until later in the season?

The best pro-active treatment would be to educate your neighbor.

    Re: VIRUSES: SILENT KILLER

I'm hearing more and more beekeepers say they are no longer using brood comb from deadouts.Deadouts are a great opportunity to get rid of any old comb.

Clayton, there is a lot of info out there.A quick google of "fecal / oral transmission of honey bee virus" brought up this 16 yr old but still relevant study plus many others.(the authors are still...

    Re: When to Split?

    Cconnell gives some excellent information.
However,as a first year beek,I would suggest that you first learn the rhythm of a colony.Swarming is the natural reproduction of a colony and occurs when...
  18. Re: Liquid rubber for outside of Nuc Boxes

With the cheap cost of mis-tints at name paint stores($5-8 gal) I hardly think it's worth the cost. The cut edges of cdx is worth coating with titebond glue.
  19. Re: When to set out bait hives in Massachusetts?

I'm just south of Springfield and I shoot for end of April ,first week in May.This spring seems to be earlier than usual so I will put them out earlier.Later than that I'm dealing with other bee work.

Re: Too much winter feed left, what to do?

Like you say,you could remove sealed syrup from honey super and replace with foundation.
Freeze syrup frames and use as feed next winter in the brood med. Or use to make splits.

Re: Simplest Way to Build Frames

Easier to cut the boxes down to mediums.
You could then use a slice of the cut off to extend the shallows to 6 5/8.
Pull the nails along the cut line first, wear a good pair of safety glasses and...

    Re: Russian Queens

It has been recommended to me by a Rus breeder to delay Q introduction by placing a strip of tape over the candy hole for 3-4 days.
That or a push in cage.
    Works every time.
  25. Re: Treating a resource hive with Formic Pro

I believe the issue is not number of frames but whether or not you have adequate ventilation.I think the formic vapors are heavier than air.
Last year or the year before at Mass Beek field day,Tom...
