Re: removing nuisance bees from water source

I agree with burying the end of the pipe in a gravel trap.

I have had reasonable luck with keeping bees at my water source and out of my neighbors hot tub by putting an aquarium heater at 85 ish...

Re: Entrance feeder vs. top feeder

Other thing that may help is running a few drops of syrup down the ladder/bee tube from the feeder into the hive. I suspect doing this may guide some bees in with the logic of they are following the...
  3. Re: Will the coronavirus negatively affect the beekeeping industry?

This is about what I am thinking. If people are unemployed/unsure about future employment they are a lot less likely to start a new hobby or put as much discretionary spending into one they already...

Re: Brushy Mountain is no longer???

Last time I ordered stuff from Kelly was last fall. I could tell which line they came from because the Kelly boxes have narrower hand holds, while the Mann lake ones have wider hand holds.

Re: Humidity - Insulated hive - no top exits

Those sound like good values for inside a hive. I was having problems with way to much moisture (90+% RH) in my hive and was having mold problems. I started running quilt boxes to help with high...
  6. Re: Any alternatives to Kelley F style foundationless frames?

I have no experience with these, but they look similar (if I am thinking of the right type)

Re: Humidity - Insulated hive - no top exits

What humidity are you seeing inside the hive? Are you having any mold problems?

The 80-85F sounds right for a hive if you are not in the middle of the cluster and it is well insulated.

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

Last night I set up a camera looking on one of my hives. Today I used the video feed as my video for video conferences at work today. Several people commented on this and enjoyed it. :)

Re: Add salt to your bees water supply

    How big is your pond?

I put a few tablespoons of salt and about 1 of honey into a 5 gallon bucket. Between these additions and keeping the water warm I have been able to keep bees out of my...
  11. Re: Electric fence charger - how do I charge my battery, and how long will it last?

Why do you want to remove the grounding rods? It may be easier to just get new ones.

Re: A sign of the times

Not touching anything that you dont want contaminated is a a hard principal for most people to get used to. Depending on the person wearing gloves may give them a false sense of security, or it may...

Re: Building Jar Top Hive Feeder

If the jar lid is more than about 1/16" from the screen the bees will probably not be able to get to the syrup. The bees don't have a really long tongue (I dont remember the name) so it needs to be...
  14. Re: Another hobbyist building question, improved box-box sealing with silicone bead?

I suspect the silicone would start sticking and gluing the boxes together making them harder to get apart. You would also have to be careful not to rip out the sides when prying boxes apart. I have...
  15. Re: Hive Assembly Question? What Type of glue works and or what can be substituted ?

The store bought ones that I have use a wooding bar with a slot in it. The metal excluder is placed into the slots in all 4 bars then they are glued together. I suspect this will hold up much...

Sticky: Re: Today in the Apiary

I decided this method of keeping my bees at my water source is working (last fall and this spring) so I figured I would share.

    Re: Feeding question

Pure white refined sugar is the best thing to feed them with. My understanding is that the unprocessed sugar has more solids which can cause more problems during the winter.
