Looks interesting but, I would think the stalk material would be hard to get a full seal on the sides? Do the bees just fill the spaces with propolis?

Yes, he’s a friend and very trustworthy. I inspected things and did not see any AFB.
  3. What is this pest on the frame (photo)?

I picked up a hive from a friend that had been sitting behind his shed for a while. Here is some pest I found, but don’t know what it is
  4. Re: Why does everyone think used equipment is ALL bad?

Just to clarify, I currently have no hives so the only thing these would be infecting would be 2 medium boxes with drawn comb and 3 deep frames.
  5. Re: Why does everyone think used equipment is ALL bad?

So what do you look for? What would make you walk away from an offer of equipment?
  6. Why does everyone think used equipment is ALL bad?

I have a friend willing to give me 2 old(a few years) hives that he isn't using. He did beekeeping for a few seasons and then quit. He has a lot of other hobbies LOL:lpf:

    So, other than looking...

So I assume it's ok to use and the bees will just clean it up?

I hope this is just mold...

These frames had been in storage for a few years, but i am hoping to use them this Spring. I definitely saw mold and have read that the bees will clean that right up.

    What concerns me is the...

Re: Should I go with Saskatraz packages

They are more expensive definitely, so wondering if I should pick a cheaper package?

Re: Should I go with Saskatraz packages

So you put them on drawn comb? I will be putting whatever packages I get in new hives. I plan to feed them sugar and hopefully get them to draw out the frames and then when the flow kicks on I'll put...

Should I go with Saskatraz packages

I will be getting back into things here in Pennsylvania this season and am wondering what kind of bees to order. I have heard good things about Saskatraz bees. My primary goal is to get honey. I have...

Re: Apis Cerana vs. Apis Millifera

It depends. I knew beeks there who only did cerana and then those who did both. So yes, there are some who use cerana for honey. But bigger producers I think use mellifera.

Re: Apis Cerana vs. Apis Millifera

Believe it or not, I actually have experience with 2 apis cerana colonies while I was still living in Southeast Asia. They are very different from Apis Millifera and don't produce nearly as much...
  14. Re: Harvest all the honey from the supers? As soon as its capped?

What I'm trying to say is I know there is this this emphasis on giving bees what they need to survive and I'm all for that. However, I know some guy who do that and their bees still die over the...
  15. Harvest all the honey from the supers? As soon as its capped?

Two seasons ago, I had two hives that were building up very nicely and sometime in Mid-July they were starting to cap honey in the supers. I was pretty happy with their progress and thought I'd have...
  16. Re: What to do with a nuc dead-out with drawn comb and honey

Non-intervention was the problem. I didn't work the hive or inspect since summer. Judging from the few dead bees left, I think they ran out of room and swarmed and the remaining bees just died either...
  17. What to do with a nuc dead-out with drawn comb and honey

I have a dead-out with 5 frames of drawn comb and lots of honey. There are about 5 sides of the frames with drawn comb that's empty and the rest is full of honey(mostly capped). I'd like to install a...
  18. Can a new hive be used w/ a pollen trap

from a nuc or new package

How realistic is it that I'd get a good amount of pollen off of a new hive (from a nuc or new package) and not mess up the bees too much.

    Goldenrod flow for Pollen Trapping?

how does the fall flow and goldenrod compare to the spring flow in terms of bee pollen production if using a trap?
  20. Re: My strongest hive ate a ton of honey in 3 supers

I appreciate that but I did send a PM to Barry months ago requesting a location update, but never received any reply.
  21. Re: My strongest hive ate a ton of honey in 3 supers

Haha yes. Super expensive as in my first harvest
  22. Re: My strongest hive ate a ton of honey in 3 supers

LOL. I used to be in Indo but am back in PA now. For some reason I can't update my location.
  23. My strongest hive ate a ton of honey in 3 supers

I forgot to put on a queen excluder and came back after about 9-10 days and was pissed. Not only did the queen lay all over the place in the 3 supers, but the bees ate a TON of the honey they had...
  24. Re: Trapping pollen w/ Sundance II pollen trap and not affect honey production?

Hi Clyde thanks for all your input on the pollen stuff. So you are saying you lose about a shallow super's worth of honey a season?

In my area, pollen is pretty pricey as we have a big health food...
  25. Re: Trapping pollen w/ Sundance II pollen trap and not affect honey production?

Ok, so I am confused by the economics of all this. If I lose about a medium super's worth of honey b/c of having a pollen trap on, that's roughly $360 at $10 a lb for local honey. So how much...
