  1. Re: Post swarm queen not laying, how long is too long?

    Welcome,
    http://www.bushfarms.com/beesmath.htm

Assuming 35 days less 8 to cap gives you about 27 days from the 23rd. You really do not know if she was capped when they last swarmed. You saw the...

Re: Is this a normal amount of drone cells?

At least they are drawing out the super. If you want drone free supers it pretty much requires an excluder. But then expect drone cells on your brood frames and they may put it there even if you give...

Re: Is this a normal amount of drone cells?

Where they put drone comb varies greatly. If you have two deeps and a super and that is most of your drone, that is not much drone. I would expect they will sneak some in along bottom bars if they...

Re: You don't know til you look

It is not the foragers that have the highest value. There are plenty of normal worker bees in the mix of LWs. Let alone honey, comb and boxes.
If you do not want to shake remove a couple of frames...
  5. Re: Effective to simply keep cutting out swarm cells?

Is there a little more to it? Bees are a little hotter in my few short years as well. Is a hotter bee more mite tolerant and more likely to swarm? Is more pressure just forcing a more natural bee?

    Re: Easy cell builder help

went in today. The Rose side nuc had one capped swarm cell that had to be an inch and a half long and two uncapped swarm cells that were attached to the bottom bar. Bummer. Wonder if there was not a...

Standard gap advice here is a nail. 1/4 would be better here.

    Re: Deck coatings

I was taught to coat it before you build it especially the frame. That does not work with PT wood, too wet. The weak spot is the side between boards and the bottom. I do not shovel the deck so some...

    Benjamin Moore Arborcoat= 1 year

Based on the advice of neighbor that has sold paint for 20 + years. Cabot Australian Oil, going on 3 yrs on top of the Arborcoat. No, I did not strip off the old...

Re: Success In Transporting Queen Cells?

    From Betterbee (just googling)
7 A particularly delicate stage of queen pupa development: Around Day 13 after the egg was laid. Queen cells are vertical, not horizontal like those of workers and...

Re: Success In Transporting Queen Cells?

On what day is the current thinking? Memory says just capped ok, almost hatched Ok, bad in the middle. Precapped is better to transport.

Re: You don't know til you look

You can make queens early, but that is just impatience. My long distance guess is the failed nucs were late or very early splits.
Make use of your LW bees. Place inside or shake a couple of the...

    Re: A stumper: errant queen

I have seen queens all alone outside a hive. She is free to walk in and out of the hive. Had the impression they were not too impressed with her. Mostly in the fall in nucs that die over the winter....
  16. Re: Laying queen release from quad mating to regular nucs

I have found the clip to be a better theory than reality. The double wide clip (for 4 half frames) makes a safe introduction as she can stay in between her own frames. Try an inspection with the clip...

    Re: Best Bee Vac?

My company does around 500-1000 cut outs a year.

Statement does not indicate it is an "I".

Started to a keeper means a visible cell that begins to look different.
Started to a bee is sooner than that.

  20. Re: Preponderance capped brood necessarily leading to swarm?

sorry to be slow, I did not see post. All indications are that the original queen did swarm. Still a lot of bees and I found no more QCs. If I was not looking for intentionally started cells I...

Re: Bees not expanding to new frames

I have read that foundation less frames can be challenging for new beekeepers

You have some straight frames from the nuc, that's a start. The partial frame drawn poorly on the backside should go...

Re: Bees not expanding to new frames

You asked how to get them to expand. What they are in now matters.
  23. Re: Preponderance capped brood necessarily leading to swarm?

The shake does not put momentum in the bees. More like pulling a tablecloth out from under dishes. Shake is about an inch down and up.

She would fall in a pile of bees, true.
  24. Re: This is giving me a splitting headache....pardon the pun....photo

Swarm impulse is a strange cat. Did you get swarm cells in the lower halves as well?

Re: Bees not expanding to new frames

Hey JW, I missed the wonky shadows.
Let me throw in a welcome. I am not sure of your set up when you speak of a super. Did you put the nuc frames in a 5 frame nuc or a ten frame box? Single story or...
