    Re: Hive going queenless

You would have thought that the queen would have eggs/larvae before she perished...
Did she just stop laying and die days later? Seems strange.

    Hive going queenless

Ever notice that when a hive loses a queen, the bees don’t always raise a new queen...

Re: Caged queen without attendants--how long?

My guess is that the breeder will place the queens in a vented box surrounded by nurse bees.

Many are. Beekeeping’s dirty little secret.

    Re: Deck coatings

    R,
Is brushing (it’s a large deck) the only way to apply it?
Does it needs to completely dry? I’m thinking a possible rain shower while doing it.
    Thanks !

    Rich,
Is the SU water or oil based? I’m guessing oil.

    R,
Do you thin it down or use it straight up?

    Re: Deck coatings

    Thanks R,
I’m leaving it the color that it now is (wife happy with it). It’s a pretty good sized deck, so 3 coats... yuck! :(

    Deck coatings

Last year I had a wooden deck built around a swimming pool. I believe I’ll need to coat it with something to make it last.
Any recommendations for a deck coating most appreciated.
    Thanks!

  12. Re: Hard to find queen when wanting to replace her

I agree. I’m more apt to answer a question that’s been asked often AFTER I hear they’ve searched but couldn’t find or didn’t understand.

    Re: Queen excluder material

I've only seen QE's offered to fit 8,10 hives and 5 frame nucs. Never heard of a "roll" of QE material.

Re: Is Mann Lake operational right now?

Talked to some folks at ML. They say they are swamped with NEW beekeepers ordering supplies. Evidently, the pandemic has lured people (with time on their hands and always wanted to try) into starting...

    Queen Issues

After reading Clarence Collison’s write up on all the issues that queens can and do have. I’m no longer tempted to “baby” a queen in the hope she’ll “turn around and start producing.”
    She doesn’t...

Re: Using a shaker box to find elusive queen(s)

It can get hectic, but it works. I rarely need to find a queen, just evidence that she’s alive and laying well

Re: Please Post your Swarm Dates?

Where I’m located in SC, the nectar flow dies right around 06/01 so now is a great time to pull brood for splits as there is not a nurse or emerging bee that’s going to be a nectar/pollen gatherer...

Re: Splits -why not move queen?

I always take the queen. The old hive has plenty of resources to raise another. That way the old hive has a new queen. I’ll see how the “old” queen in the new split does and if I don’t like her,...

Re: Who manages the almond bees and how?

Almond honey is absolutely beautiful! Crystal clear but tastes terrible! Imagine drinking almond abstract, you get the idea. First time I tasted it, I spit it out and said never again!
